#Winnebago tribe’s chairwoman says an act of #Congress needed to fix the problem is close to becoming law. It’s about 1,600 acres right along the Missouri River between #SiouxCity and #Sloan.
The #Winnebago#Tribe of #Nebraska stands to receive 1,600 acres of land that was taken a half century ago for a recreation area that never materialized.
The land, on the Iowa side of the #MissouriRiver would be returned under a bill introduced recently in the #USSenate by U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer & her fellow #Iowa & Nebraska senators — Pete Ricketts, Chuck Grassley & Joni Ernst.
Ouch... the #Winnebago used to live in central Wisconsin and northern Illinois, but #war, #smallbox, and #measles reduced their population from 25,000 to only about 150 people, according to the tribe itself.
