My "new" off-brand Walkman showed up today! It works, though it definitely needs some attention - loads of wow and flutter and noise, too much even for something like this.
I few weeks ago I picked up a tube-based headphone amplifier, a Schiit Lyr, the first generation model. Two tubes in it. Got it for like 80 bucks, a good deal, but he only had one tube for it.
I picked up some NOS tubes from a vendor online and rolled them into the unit.
Sounds fantastic. I was worried the previous owner had been an idiot and broke something.
Dear @norniron - I have some old hifi, slide projector and computer stuff I'm trying to find good homes for. Do you have any ideas on good uses for them or where they could go?
I moved my turntable from my digital AV receiver to a 70s Pioneer amp that was collecting dust in my wife's grandma's closet, connected to a pair of 80s JBL cabinet speakers from my dad (woofers refoamed 20 years ago). The amp is powerful and sounds great, except the right speaker channel is gritty (bad capacitor?), so until I get it serviced, I guess I'll be listening to #mono records. #VintageAudio#VintageHiFi@vinylrecords
@vinylrecords#NowPlaying DUKE ELLINGTON - MASTERPIECES BY ELLINGTON in uncut concert arrangements (Columbia, 1956 reissue). Originally released in 1951, one of the first 12-inch LPs to take advantage of the extended play time with long-form arrangements. Masterpieces indeed. #DukeEllington#jazz#vinyl#mono
@vinylrecords#NowPlaying OTIS BLUE / OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL (Volt/Sundazed, 2001 reissue; originally released 1965). Not only did my camera distort the cover, but the left channel on this vintage amp just started cracking up too. Welp, my brief mono record run has come to an end. Hopefully I'll get this system running clean stereo sound soon! #OtisRedding#soul#vinyl
Belts replaced, flywheel freed of gunk, mechanics lubricated. We’re getting somewhere. Needs lots more cleaning and lubrication to work more reliably still but so far things are very promising! Even the lights still work, except the one behind the cassette compartment. #Sansui#SC1100#TapeDeck#Repair#Restoration#VintageAudio#VintageHifi
I tinkered some more and made my own seasonal ornament yesterday evening. The plastic holder for the 12V lamp lighting the tape from the backside was missing altogether. I solved the issue with several layers of heat shrink tubing and a small cable tie. Works like a charm! #Sansui#SC1100#TapeDeck#Repair#Restoration#VintageAudio#VintageHifi
I have a vintage German radio from around the 60s. It has this plug labeled as the mic input. Does anyone know where I can find a suitable mic for it or a cable I could use to connect a mic to it? #VintageHifi#hifi
@sludgefeast The data pins might be used for something like an "engage" button on the original mic. If so, you should be able to jury rig a button there if necessary and just use the five pins for RCA/phono as suggested in the linked post.
@davbucci I'm still a bit clumsy and fearful around delicate mechanical parts (especially if they are on a device that I can't imagine living without) but it's incredibly rewarding when things go according to plan with these elderly turntables! :D
Been repairing an early 1990s #Sony 550ES amplifier over the last couple of days. The speaker protection relays needed replacing and all switches and pots needed a thorough cleaning. Took everything apart and cleaned it after replacing the old relays with modern equivalents and also adjusted the idling current to just about perfect. Works like a charm again, sounds great and looks nearly as good as new! Very satisfied with the result. 😊 #InTheLabDoingStuff#VintageHifi#Repair#VintageAudio
@edinburgh_man Yeah, the transformer is super heavy and beefy! Working on audio stuff is satisfying indeed! I usually work on even older devices from the 70s, they are just magnificent. Built to be easily serviceable, too. More civilized times. 😊
@edinburgh_man Although Sony made their stuff relatively serviceable for a long time. Haven’t worked on anything that’s super recent but at least their devices from the early 2000s even still have markings for which screws you have to remove to get in. Which is quite remarkable compared to other electronics from that time.
I couldn't find this manual or the schematics within online, so I bought a hard copy. What's the best way to scan this for upload to the Internet Archive?
@prokyonid It looks like it's just stapled together - in which case, a flatbed scanner will work well. Scan as greyscale and enable Descreening. After that, upload the images to archive.org.
If you have pages which are too big to scan, scan them in several parts. Aim for about 1/3rd of a page of overlap between each section. After that, stitch together with your favourite image editor.
Lastly save with lossless compression - PNG is a good choice.
Yesterday I bought a non-functional Dual turntable and a functional (but likely in need of maintenance) Dynaco PAS-4 preamplifier.
They will be hooked to my Project/ONE vintage receiver. I also have obtained some GIANT Pioneer speakers and some small HH Scott ones, both in need of new foam surrounds.
Hi, audio and tech people. I'm trying to find manuals for Radio Shack's old Optimus car cassette decks from the mid to late 90s, for a project I'm working on. If anyone could help point me in the correct direction, it'd be greatly appreciated.
