Hey I had one of those! (No it is not mine, just an image I found).

(Also why were ALL technical manuals bound with those steel rings back then?)

I few weeks ago I picked up a tube-based headphone amplifier, a Schiit Lyr, the first generation model. Two tubes in it. Got it for like 80 bucks, a good deal, but he only had one tube for it.

I picked up some NOS tubes from a vendor online and rolled them into the unit.

Sounds fantastic. I was worried the previous owner had been an idiot and broke something.

Tell you what though, it runs DAMN hot.

Dear @norniron - I have some old hifi, slide projector and computer stuff I'm trying to find good homes for. Do you have any ideas on good uses for them or where they could go?

I moved my turntable from my digital AV receiver to a 70s Pioneer amp that was collecting dust in my wife's grandma's closet, connected to a pair of 80s JBL cabinet speakers from my dad (woofers refoamed 20 years ago). The amp is powerful and sounds great, except the right speaker channel is gritty (bad capacitor?), so until I get it serviced, I guess I'll be listening to records. @vinylrecords

New video! I'm repairing and restoring a 1977/78 Sansui SC-1100 tape deck. Replacing the belts, recapping the boards and doing lots of cleaning and lubrication. Link: https://youtu.be/pgC-ewegKlk

Belts replaced, flywheel freed of gunk, mechanics lubricated. We’re getting somewhere. Needs lots more cleaning and lubrication to work more reliably still but so far things are very promising! Even the lights still work, except the one behind the cassette compartment. #Sansui #SC1100 #TapeDeck #Repair #Restoration #VintageAudio #VintageHifi

A little videoclip of the Sansui after replacing the belts, tons of cleaning and lubrication. Playback, stop, rewind and fast forward work. The VU meters and the tape counter also seem to be fine!

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

Spent the better part of last night using up all my cotton swabs and gallons of different lubricants and isopropanol. Got the mechanism working nicely now. The motor could use some lubrication on the back bearing but I didn’t dare taking it apart yet. I also need to get myself some proper test tapes to set everything up eventually. Very happy with the progress so far though! Just needs one lamp replaced and more new caps.

@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

I tinkered some more and made my own seasonal ornament yesterday evening. The plastic holder for the 12V lamp lighting the tape from the backside was missing altogether. I solved the issue with several layers of heat shrink tubing and a small cable tie. Works like a charm! #Sansui #SC1100 #TapeDeck #Repair #Restoration #VintageAudio #VintageHifi

The front of the cassette mechanism on the Sansui tape deck. There is a light pipe plastic strip in the middle between the tape reels to light the window on the cassette.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

There is a pretty clever translucent plastic light pipe behind the mechanism, so the bulb doesn’t interfere with the mechanical parts. I love little engineering feats like that. #Sansui #SC1100 #TapeDeck #Repair #Restoration #VintageAudio #VintageHifi

I also went ahead and replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the main PCB. Many of the old ones were bulging and/or leaking electrolyte. These older caps often leak through the rubber seals on the bottom so the damage is invisible until you remove them. I used polyester film caps to replace the very small value electrolytic caps below 1uF. #Sansui #SC1100 #TapeDeck #Repair #Restoration #VintageAudio #VintageHifi

The main PCB after recapping. I used Panasonic FC series electrolytic caps and some rectangular polyester caps to replace the old electrolytics.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

Side note: it’s such a nice experience working on 70s/80s tech that was actually build to be serviceable! Didn’t even have to take the circuit board out or remove any other parts except for the top cover and the bottom plate. Everything is easily accessible after that. #Sansui #SC1100 #TapeDeck #Repair #Restoration #VintageAudio #VintageHifi

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

That concludes the first part of this restoration/repair and I have to say I am very happy with the result. I’m going to have to revisit and do some adjustments when I have some proper test tapes. Works fairly well already though (and it looks absolutely magnificent in my opinion)! #Sansui #SC1100 #TapeDeck #Repair #Restoration #VintageAudio #VintageHifi

I have a vintage German radio from around the 60s. It has this plug labeled as the mic input. Does anyone know where I can find a suitable mic for it or a cable I could use to connect a mic to it? #VintageHifi #hifi

New video! I'm doing some maintenance on my beloved SL-1710 turntable from the seventies. I'm recapping it, replacing the dampening fluid in the tone arm lift mechanism and doing some general cleaning and lubrication. In the lab, doing stuff with a 1970s turntable. Delicate mechanics still scare me a bit.

Been repairing an early 1990s 550ES amplifier over the last couple of days. The speaker protection relays needed replacing and all switches and pots needed a thorough cleaning. Took everything apart and cleaned it after replacing the old relays with modern equivalents and also adjusted the idling current to just about perfect. Works like a charm again, sounds great and looks nearly as good as new! Very satisfied with the result. 😊

I couldn't find this manual or the schematics within online, so I bought a hard copy. What's the best way to scan this for upload to the Internet Archive?

I am on a #VintageHiFi journey.

Yesterday I bought a non-functional Dual turntable and a functional (but likely in need of maintenance) Dynaco PAS-4 preamplifier.

They will be hooked to my Project/ONE vintage receiver. I also have obtained some GIANT Pioneer speakers and some small HH Scott ones, both in need of new foam surrounds.

Hi, audio and tech people. I'm trying to find manuals for Radio Shack's old Optimus car cassette decks from the mid to late 90s, for a project I'm working on. If anyone could help point me in the correct direction, it'd be greatly appreciated.
