#OldTimers here might remember the #XRN#Usenet#NetNews reader.
It still works, it's wicked fast, and it takes up ridiculously little RAM (<7MB!).
I'm learning how to maintain Debian packages, and I used XRN to practice on, so now I've got a Debian XRN package mostly ready to go. I'm wondering if there's enough interest to try to get it into Debian. So: if there were a Debian XRN package, would you use it?

Et moi, ça m’inquiète : vu le temps que je passe à butiner sur les groupes de discussion, vu celui que je consacre à remplir ma capsule Gemini et à en découvrir d’autres, je me demande si je ne serais pas un peu nécrophile…

There are many parallels between the #Fediverse today and #Usenet back in the day before the web took over.
Was there any USENET conference back in the 80's or early 90's? Anybody know?
Would be interesting to compare the subjects discussed then with the subjects we discuss now about the Fediverse in places such as #FediForum. There might be overlap!
For those of us of a certain age (who typically now have a lot of gray in our hair🤣) who were online before the #Internet connected everything, #USENET was one of the original places where we posted in forums, engaged in debates (and the occasional flame war), learned a lot, spent way too much time, and yes, sometimes dealt with abusive and toxic behavior. USENET never really went away, and some are trying to bring it back…
TIL that on #hashtags on #mastodon only work on your own server, making them completely useless if you live on a small instance. You won't see anything and nobody will ever read your stuff.
Come on! We had this working 40 years ago! #usenet was federated, built on #OSS, and if I was a #furry#hacker who did #capoeira I could discuss precisely these topics with anyone from any server.

Bruh. #Usenet, #Fidonet and #UUCP (#UUCPnet) beg to differ (no reason you couldn't use #NNCP for Usenet now if #NNTP isn't your thing).

I use #gnus as a client. It's great so far. I pitty the fool who uses web tools for everything, as those remove so much usability.
reading old threads is great. So much of modern tools push "new" things
I failed to find any active groups. There are posts here (freebsd.annouce) and there (start trek new episode discussion), but when they said usenet is a dessert they may have been right
somehow the most recently active group I found was about Trump. I know internet hates him, but really?
So it looks like an exercise in Internet archaeology.
