I was out in the pouring rain for 4 hours, walked 3 miles, bought a pie at the Lutheran church, fish pie at the AnB hall, watched a parade, then bought black cod tips and went home. Sitka at its finest and I loved every minute.
I designed this painting, “Raven Baby,” one of a 3 piece transformation series. The painting shows Raven being born of a woman. The painting hangs in the Allen Auditorium on the Sheldon Jackson College campus in #Sitka#Alaska I used the design on the cover of my book of poems, “Raven’s Echo” https://uapress.arizona.edu/book/ravens-echo
Sitka Airport through Wednesday up to 18.23 inches (463.0mm) of rain this month. That's nearly twice normal and this is already the fourth highest September rainfall on record (since 1948), and likely that additional rain Saturday evening will push this month to third wettest Sept. The Sitka NOAA Climate Reference Network Station just north of town is already over 20 inches (515mm) this month. #akwx#Sitka#ExtremeWeather#Autumn2023@SilverSalmonAK@LordsofHardwired

7:AM 52F Cloudy. 100% chance of rain this weekend. We've got gales out front and 2 to 3 inches of rain predicted. The wind has started making the trees sway. Gusts here in town up to 30/40 mph.
This is a pic of what's coming: fishing for winter kings in January. Heading down to the boat in a snow squall.
We are well and truly in the middle of the atmospheric river. It rained steadily all night. We might get a couple of inches overall in the next couple of days.
Gonna be pretty glorious.
I remember a birthday about 25 years ago - it poured rain all day in Albuquerque. My mother made fun of me celebrating that fact. But heck - rain is ABQ was RARE! And on my B-day yet!
This was taken 4 years ago from Seafood Producers Co-op as we were off-loading salmon from the 2nd King opener.
I miss my days fishing on the boat, but alas, the lure of a steady paycheck, health insurance, and a modicum of retirement made me give up the Xtra Tuffs for sneakers. (I still have to be comfortable!)
58F and chilly! I watched the fog roll through Lincoln St. (downtown Sitka) at about 1:30 from my office. I literally went to the door because I thought something was burning.
The mountains are now shrouded in fog and that's my favorite kind of afternoon.
@seachanger Hops laying claim to a legislator's office.
Shhhh...he's subversive. Dogs technically aren't allowed in the LIO. But does he care? He's got village in his blood. He was conceived in Bethel and has never forgotten his roots.
You know what "hot" is in the SE of AK? 70 here in Sitka, mid-70's in places like Juneau and Petersburg.
Granted, it will FEEL really hot to me (and many others in the SE) but if you call for the weather forecast they are saying to check on elders and stay inside with AC, minimizing your exposure to the heat and sun.
Undated, Qui Fah (1880-1958) who moved to Sitka in 1895 where she ran a restaurant & laundry for a few years. Known as "China Mary" but many Americans called Chinese women that rather than learn their names. First Chinese woman in Sitka, perhaps AK. #alaskahistory#alaska#sitka
"Summer is a state of mind" she whispers to herself as she wears summer attire on what is clearly an autumnal day.
"You are a strong Alaskan woman" she tells herself firmly as she tries and fails to get the office heat to work and shivers all day in her summer attire.
"Screw this!" she proclaims as she heads home through 35mph gusts of (cold) wind & rain. "I want my sweats!"
Brrrr!
(Disclaimer - I love this weather if I am smart enough to dress for it!)
