I am contemplating the idea of starting a #pixelfed instance. I thought if it in the past, but it seemed so cumbersome that I gave up. Mastodon felt easier and since I started to use containers (k8s), it is even better - a breeze to upgrade.
Has things change? Has Pixelfed became easier to deploy and admin?
@rabble it had better #UX and the @Gargron running it was an effective communicator at #KISS and built it out as a #4opens project alongside a healthy (white) lie about security and privacy. The rest of the projects lacked these things - Pleroma the obverse compaine was ripped apart by the #geekproblem then embraced by the right-wing. #Peertube was stuck in a good but very closed development for years. #Pixelfed is a little brother project to mastodon.
#Pixelfed on #Android is so horrible despite the many good improvements. the experience really feels so janky. no photo picker, uploading multiple photos requires picking them one at a time from the file picker, adding ALT text is ABSOLUTELY frustrating cos u couldn't even see the cursor, u couldn't move the cursor whatsoever to whichever part of ur ALT text, u couldn't even scroll thru ur ALT text to SEE what's been written. ive dumped #Instagram for this, happily, but this sucks ass.
Pixelfed Brain Trust: I'm trying to import my Instagram history into my own self-hosted server, but the importer is asking for a media.json file that no longer exists in Instagram's latest data download format. Furthermore, there is also NO photos directory either.
Is Pixelfed lagging Instagram on this front or has someone addressed this? Note that I installed the server last night, so I should be up to date with the latest codebase.
Yesterday I started messing around with Pixelfed via Pxlmo and I do like it. Very early Instagram feel. I posted 3 posts last night- a post with 4 images first, and 2 single ones after that. Below is a screenshot of what all 3 look like via the Pxlmo interface in Chrome (browser version, there's currently no Android app I could find) on an Android.
I just clicked on the link to my profile here in Tusky and my account does load in the app, but only the first 4-shot post is showing up. It's a start! 🤣
Again, my profile link is https://pxlmo.com/jake4480 and if you're on there, hook it up, I'll follow back, etc.
