Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), the right-wing aka fascist Hungarian educational institution funded by Viktor Orbán’s rightwing government, has been expanding internationally. It opened a centre in #Brussels, bought a university in #Vienna and has plans for new branches in other western European cities, including London.
Its' views are closely aligned with fascist Orbán, and it funds academics who disseminate Orbán’s positions to extend his influence across Europe and beyond.
MCC has tremendous financial backing, receiving more than £1.3bn in Hungarian state funding in 2020. MCC offers can be hard to turn down. It provides funding, scholarships, housing, invitations to lavish dinners, open-bar parties, trips abroad & more $$
Peter Magyar, a turncoat from #Orban 's own #Fidesz party, says he wants to make #Hungary a normal democratic country again. He left Fidesz and joined a minor opposition party, suddenly bringing it up to around 25 percent in the polls ahead of the #EuropeanElections . While Orban's party remains the most popular, especially in small towns, the gap is narrowing. FRANCE 24's Gulliver Cragg reports.

#Hungary’s prime minister is often the odd man out in the #EU and the NATO military alliance. Since #Russia’s invasion of #Ukraine, Viktor #Orban has been essentially alone in pushing back against Western efforts to come to #Kyiv’s aid. With the war now in its third year and Ukraine in dire need of assistance, the nationalist leader’s stonewalling is exasperating Hungary’s allies and raising questions about his government’s true allegiances.
Viktor #Orbán’s #Hungary is holding up legislation that would enable #Ukraine to receive up to €2bn for weapons from the #EU, in a blow to efforts to mobilise profits from Russian assets frozen under sanctions.
“For the time being they are blocking everything connected to the military support to Ukraine,” said one of the people, suggesting #Budapest’s reservations would remain until at least next month’s European elections.
Former president Donald #Trump again invoked authoritarian leaders at a rally Thursday, a reminder of a vision he has been outlining for a potential second term.
Trump referenced Russian President Vladimir #Putin, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, Chinese leader #Xi Jinping and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor #Orban.
Trump said the leaders were “at the top of their game, whether you like it or not.”
By deepening economic relations with both #China and #Russia, #Orbán hopes to give #Hungary an oversized say in global decision-making. And his “friendship” with #Putin is feeding the ever-growing clientelism within his government and funding his cronies.
For example, while other European countries have been downgrading the size of their staff at Russian embassies and consulates, staff numbers at the Russian Embassy in Budapest are on the rise.
While most Western countries are concerned with extrajudicial security personnel from #China going after Chinese dissidents and other interference via secret police stations, Hungary just went and signed a deal with China: "lol, police from a totalitarian country officially patrolling our streets? sure thing"
