Many thanks to OGIS Director Alina Semo & OIP Director Bobak Talebian Talebian for fielding so many questions, & State Department Chief FOIA Officer Eric Stein for his fulsome answers. Thanks to the U.S. National Archives, video of today's public meeting is online. I'll summarize the answers to my questions in text, separately. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQyY4O8Mc6s #OpenGov
Apparently my city IT department provided my agency leadership with an estimate that putting 1TB of PDFs online in a searchable format could cost $250K+ 👀
On the other hand, a colleague suggested that we may just upload everything to a website on Wix. 🙃
Neither idea seems like the right solution! Is there anything like Document Cloud but for public sector agencies? https://www.documentcloud.org/home
Nice piece by @parismarx about the importance of physical media. and the right to control, for equitable access. The cloud is by definition somebody else’s property and this has real repercussions beyond mere entertainment. Too many in #heritage#opengov and lots of other sectors think that putting something online alone makes it findable and reusable.
Excited to see the government of France standing up an official Mastodon server. How much longer must we wait for the US to follow our European allies and have #OpenGov social media feeds free of corporate walls and security risks?

Excepting the cover page, the entire document is created by a #QuartoPub + #RStats pipeline that turns two Excel files with messy project and financial request data into the clearest and best-looking 500+ page report I could create. Fully reproducible repository should be coming next week. #BaltimoreCity#OpenGov#OpenBaltimore
#Digitalisierung#OpenGov
Should Congressional info be available to the public, journalists, civil society, and Members of Congress?
Federal courts will hear argument in 3 cases this Wednesday on the release of the torture report, USCP behavior pre-Jan 6, and improper help to Congress -- with big implications for #opengov
I describe those cases and discuss what it means for Congress to proactively and responsively disclose information necessary for democracy.
We're delighted to see so many excellent quality submissions in response to the #EverythingOpen#CfP - which has been extended to this Thursday AoE (anywhere on earth).
What are you thinking of submitting? There's still time!
If you attended #OGPEstonia, you probably saw this face always asking the same question (in an Argentine accent): What about a public infrastructure for electoral processes? This is @pdelboca, Senior Developer at @okfn, finding allies for a project he's starting to develop 🧵
Following The New York Times, we've banned OpenAI and the like from using GovTrack to train LLMs and other AI systems going forward, per our terms of use (https://www.govtrack.us/legal) and robots.txt file.
We're skeptical that LLM AI systems have any place outside of generating uninspired fiction, we're disappointed that present-day harms aren't taken seriously, and we're concerned about how they launder the work of creators.
@GovTrack You claim be part of #opengov , and exist only to scrape and repackage public information yourself, and yet you think you can ban scraping for ideological reason centered on unoriginality?
Here are more examples of #OpenGov projects from our #OpenGovRetro. But this time we are decentralising the call to share what our Network members have been doing in their countries. Full post: https://bit.ly/47b4RVY
