I spent a good chunk of the day slimming down my Debian install on the . I moved from (and uninstalled) to . I wholesale uninstalled many preinstalled apps (such as Libre Office, Emacs, Bluez, and much, much more).

I installed and I gotta say, it is running smooth. I am even able to run with out maxing out the CPU or RAM!

All in all, its been a good day.

Well, apart from it seems, there is nothing stable out there for in terms of simple window managers.

So, it's easy to say "X11 must die" when you are using KDE or GNOME or i3, because you don't have to adapt to a new environment.

But if you are a long-term user of other window managers the switch isn't so easy.

What are users of and many others are supposed to do?

Day 4-30

Switched the default SHELL for my user from sh to bash.

This laptop has an intel graphics card. Xorg is now installed, and confirm its working by running startx and getting the default twm window manager.

Next up: install and tweak Openbox for FreeBSD (my window manager of choice on Linux).

Onward!

kkarhan,

@milquetoast personally I used 3.5 back in the era of @opensuse 10.2, but nowadays I mostly use @ubuntu LTS with , tho I also tend to like @bunsenlabs woth it's nice .

Needless to say I do love and I an working on a Distro optimized for 80x25 setups named OS/1337, which is very minimalist und anti-Stallmanist.

What is your favorite desktop environment and why? :linux:

I'm currently considering to switch away from GNOME the main reason i use it is because of the dash to dock feature (until recent events good stability ) . But i don't know much about any other environment than KDE and GNOME and i dislike KDE's task bar

kkarhan,

@weirdmedia Consider #OpenBox as in @bunsenlabs #BunsenLabsLinux or #Sway, which is a lightweight #i3-gaps-inspired compositor based on #Wayland.

In fact, @BrodieOnLinux looked at Sway some time ago...

eshep, to linux in Window Managers for the un-initiated

@qyron Maybe look at #e16, #openbox, #fluxbox, or #awesomewm, as they will be completely usable without any pre-configuration. Those will all give you a pretty well rounded feel for the comparison of window manager vs desktop environment. All are quite easy to hack on and decently documented. The appilcations menu for e16 should be auto-generated on first login, both openbox and fluxbox will most likely need to be generated manually, and awesome should just be ready to use as-is.

Give it a few tweaks, add a few applications, and a fresh splash of "paint" (themes) - the venerable Openbox window manager makes an excellent foundation for a custom lightweight and delightful Linux desktop!

What window managers/desktop environments do you have installed?

Am I the only one who has more than one?

I have:

xfce4

bspwm

openbox
icewm

Maybe a little excessive?

For those interested in a well built, lightweight Debian based disto geared towards running window managers (wm), not Desktop Environments, you may find LiliDog of interest. I use LiliDog (running sid, rolling unstable Debian). I use it with the following in a single-user space: i3wm, bspwm, openbox, hlwm, and dwm.
