I'm diving into #PodcastAP, subscribin to my podcast via #OPML export. Looking forward to finding out how it works right now - gettting notifications about new episodes and sharing those in the #fediverse.

I'll be happy when #podcast player apps support Podcast AP for managing my subscriptions across devices and apps. That might be a way out because those apps might consider subscriptions to be a lock in mechanism.

Since #PocketCasts was sold, I have a bad feeling about it.

I decided to try out Reeder 5 after years of NetNewsWire. I’ve been curious to try a new rss reader.

I’m looking to start fresh with a good opml rss file. I’m looking for mostly tech news and personal blogs.

Anyone have a great file to share?

I knew OPML only as a format where I export and migrate my podcast subscriptions; but it could be a great way to make a webpage of recommended blogs and podcasts that people can immediately subscribe to. The opml can even be styled. What if people share annotated OPML collections, rather than web rings? Will play around with this in the near future.

@inky @rra I’ve been using #OPML+XSLT to create website for a while now and I've been really happy with it.

The low-level tooling is amazing (xsltproc) but high-level tooling is not perfect for cross-platform editing.

On #macOS I use OmniOutliner by @OmniGroup , on Linux/FreeBSD I can use Electric Drummer by @davew , but I think there's a place for cross-platform improvement.

What bothers me is that some applications do link as MarkDown while others use <a> tag.

But overall, #XML is awesome!

I just discovered AntennaPod – The Open Podcast Player https://antennapod.org/

'AntennaPod is a podcast player that is completely open. The app is open-source and you can subscribe to any RSS feed. AntennaPod is built by volunteers without commercial interest, so it respects your privacy while giving you full control.'

It may just replace Pocket Casts for me!

Reading lists are such a good idea that I’m going to maintain reading lists of my own. It’s probably pretty easy to implement, but a feature of only a very few feed readers. So few that I don’t know what they are. #RSS #OPML http://scripting.com/2023/10/21/143159.html

FeedLand is about to get the reading lists feature, and I’m going to use it a lot more when it lands on feedland.org. I still won’t be able to use it much because all feed subscriptions are public, and I pay for some, and would rather you didn’t know about some others. #RSS #OPML

Reading lists are now part of the hosted FeedLand product. My first reading list is of feeds I create. It’s powered by the fork of Drupal 7, Backdrop CMS. It works! #RSS #OPML https://richard.eriksson.ca/blogosphere/opml

Blogrolls should be made available as reading lists, absolutely. #RSS #OPML https://frankmeeuwsen.com/2023/11/13/show-me-your.html

We should call them subscription lists instead of reading lists. That way, podcasts can be included without it feeling weird, not to mention any other type of media that can be enclosed in RSS feeds. #RSS #OPML

Even the word “subscription” implies having to pay. Following lists? #RSS #OPML

Does anyone know of a mobile podcasts app that would subscribe to (not just import) OPML feeds?

I'd like to manage my subscriptions in an RSS reader (inoreader) which will publish folder contents as OPML. I'd like a podcast app that automatically picks those up, without my having to download and reimport the OPML all the time.

I've created a set of nine #RSS tools at https://rssgizmos.com/ .You can make or explore #OPML files, test RSS queries for #Bing and #WordPress, search for RSS feeds on #Wikipedia, and more. 2/4

Goddamn you #GooglePodcasts for not having any facility to import/export #opml. Useless.

I am one of those caught out by the shutdown of #stitcher #podcast listening service. (Shuts down Aug 29) I like the app, have used it for years.

I am on iOS devices, and use Apple’s app if I must (meh) and have listened on Spotify if show isn’t available on Stitcher. (Also meh).

Are you on iOS? Do you use a listening app other than 3 I mentioned here? I know I am not the only one looking for a #StitcherAlternative

    susankitchens,

The nice thing about #stitcher offering an #OPML export is that I can download a few apps and try them out. Also see if they can import OPML.

    susankitchens,

@voxpelli @feedbin interesting had not heard of that app.

I’ve exported my #Stitcher #OPML file to 2 apps, Overcast and Podbean.

Both have a Something called a playlist (can have multiple), Overcast’s afaict is NOT at all like Stitcher show categories.
Will hafta see if Podbean does that and try out #feedbin as well.

After late 2022’s migrate from bird to wooly mammoth or whale, and newbie pain, I’ll hafta see how patient I am w THIS migration. 2 months to try stuff out.

    susankitchens,

More on the search for a #StitcherAlternative:

    1. Glad they give us 2 months to find a new app

    2. #OPML export/import is good

    3. TO DO right away: find setting to turn new apps to stream only (no downloads)

    4. DO NOT JUDGE/EVAL a new app right away. Install app, export OPML from #Stitcher/import to new app(s), and WAIT a day for new shows to drop.

I was looking at #Overcast— sluggish, unresponsive, incomprehensible
(Why all you ppl love it so?!) until I addressed 3 & 4, above.
