When the UK #MetOffice app predicts three hours of heavy rain - in the next three hours - with 90% confidence you might expect at least some heavy rain.
It’s remarkable how the Met Office predicted the extreme weather from Storm Ciarán so far in advance. Before the low pressure system it developed from was anything special.
I highly recommend subscribing to the Met Office YouTube channel and watching their weekly Deep Dive and 10-Day Trend videos. I watch every video they put out 😊
Clare Nasir, Alex Deakin and Aidan McGivern reflect on the conditions that brought Storm Babet to the UK this week. The Met Office is the United Kingdom's national weather service.
Persistent and heavy rain forecast for #NorthWales on Friday. Of particular note, #Snowdonia may see 100mm fall. This poses a risk of localised flooding.
🌧️ #MetOffice have issued a Yellow Warning for Rain covering most of North Wales, all day Fri until 6am Sat.
🌊 #NaturalResourcesWales have issued Yellow Warnings for risk of Flooding across entire region, Fri and Sat.
Yikes. The weather patterns over the UK and Ireland from Wednesday to Saturday are convoluted. Especially the pressure chart for Friday night into Saturday. Winds in multiple directions. Here’s a 5 minute forecast video from the Met Office that shows the pressure charts.
⚠️🌧️ #MetOffice have issued a Yellow Warning for Rain, 6am-6pm Wednesday, for parts of #Conwy and #Gwynedd. The heaviest rain is forecast for Wednesday morning. 15-30mm widely, 40-60mm locally. 30mm may fall in less than 3 hours. #NorthWales
September in the UK is on track to have a warmer average temperature than July and August. And it isn’t too much lower than June. And of the nine months of the year so far, July was only the fourth warmest, which is very unusual.
I've added in the Met Office to my tweet, so maybe I can get another clean version of this chart (like I did in February I think it was), but for now at least, this raw version of September 2023's ongoing mean temperature I ripped from this week's 'Deep Dive', shows just how abnormal the heat of the first ten days was.
Up to the 11th, it sits north of 18C.
The record for the whole month is 15.2C from 2006. The 1991-2020 average is 12.9C.
The storm names to be used by the UK, Ireland, and The Netherlands national weather services from named storms from 1st September through 31st August 2024 have been released.

Acc to the #Metoffice 'dangerous levels of heat are affecting parts of North America, Asia and southern Europe
China provisionally recorded it's highest temperature on record on Sunday (52.2 in Sanbao) and some Mediterranean countries will challenge their respective records this week
Hello from the #garden! #Breezy day, partly cloudy with a lot of sun. Nowhere near as #windy as forecast. I reckon gusting F6, #MetOffice thought thundery, gale force winds (F8). (So far, at least.)
Just had a look at the weather app… eugh I know its usually disappointing… butttttt looks like we finally have a decent amount of rain heading our way. 🎉 I mean I’ll believe it when I actually see it falling from the sky 😂 #cornwall#rain#weather#metoffice#summer#farming#uk
