Good Morning - Have a Happy Sunday everyone. If you are a fan of Irish music - I highly recommend streaming wfuv.org out of Fordham University in the Bronx on Sundays. You can take a break from the music at 11 - or if you are religious, you can listen to Mass. I skip that hour now and then tune back in at Noon for the Ceol Na nGael program til 4 pm Eastern Time.

Sipping coffee and listening to Irish music from A Thousand Welcomes via wfuv.org (Fordham University) on a Sunny Sunday morning. A nice way to begin the day. 🇮🇪☘️🎶

Just heard beloved Boston WGBH music presenter Brian O'Donovan — on an encore broadcast of his "Celtic Sojourn" — discussing old guard vs. new guard in Irish traditional music. He capped it with this perfect line from Gustav Mahler:

"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire."

bullivant, to ireland

Phil Lynott was born in Hallam Hospital in West Bromwich, England on 20 August 1949. He first attended school in Moss Side, Manchester. In 1957, due to accounts of racism and Lynott being mixed race, his mother sent him to live with his grandparents in Crumlin, Dublin. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist.

’s family are laying her body to rest today in . She was an extraordinary woman who publicly struggled with mental health issues while awing us with her musical talent.

Frequently, she held up an unflattering mirror to both her homeland and Catholicism. She was a singer of truths which many didn’t want to hear despite the realities she turned our attention to

She will be missed

Tommy Makem died on 1 August 2007. He was best known as a member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. He played the long-necked 5-string banjo, tin whistle, low whistle, guitar, bodhrán and bagpipes, and sang in a distinctive baritone.

Tonight I’m feeling a bit gutted. Sinéad O’Connor’s voice has been part of my life, my growing up, my grown-upness. Not far off 40 years. I only got her book Rememberings from the library last Christmas.
