How about if we take some time off from talking about Threads (TM) the Instagram/Facebook/Meta App, and instead talk about the best #interfaces for displaying and building a conversation #thread on the internet?
For a bit, I was chatting with some people I know from Euphoria about whether we could conceivably build a #Matrix client that would mimic Euphoria's #threaded conversation experience, and we realized that (technical challenges aside), we would quickly run into this exact issue if we tried to use this client to communicate with people using a more mainstream client, such as #Element.
Ok - https://matrix.infosec.exchange is alive! It requires an account on the mastodon instance at infosec.exchange. If there's a demand, I'll open general registrations
This is a request to all FOSS projects who only use matrix for communicating with the community.
Please consider bridging your rooms with IRC or XMPP.
India has banned Element, the most widely used Matrix client. I know it's just a client, but to be safe it's wiser to stay away from matrix for a while. So please help us in this regard.
@vordenken I self-host #Synapse with #Signal, #Telegram, and #Facebook bridges. One of the best things on my little server, deployed via docker following the official documentation. Runs rock solid and there are so many clients to choose from (currently using #Element on the phone, #Thunderbird, #Schildichat and #Emacs ement.el on the pc).
@ceresbzns sort of agreed. I am on a FOSS fork of #element anyway, but im utilizing .org server as ive found it incredibly hard to find a #homeserver that isnt EMS-hosted
@aral
I understand your bad gut feeling about that. However, if they try introducing backdoors, I'll trust my beloved open source community to quickly figure that out.
Also, funding open source projects is sth I'd like to see our authorities doing much more than pouring shitloads of tax money into corps like Microsoft.
It's now over a week. @element still has not reacted to multiple support requests both via their contact form and via email. I still don't have the data required to migrate off of their service and to a self-hosted setup.
By now, I must assume that #Element and the #EMS hosted #Matrix service are either on the brink of collapse, or don't give a flying fuck about paying customers when they're not cops or governments.
Folks, don't use their service. They won't let you leave.
While there’s absolute radio silence from @element about the topic now (not surprising, they’re simply being very corporate, as usual), there’s been a reaction by the @matrix account, and instead of being like “don’t worry, we won’t let corporate or governmental interests influence Matrix in a negative way”, they’re just being sassy about it.
Okay, I finally took the time to set up my own #Synapse server. Took me the better parts of two days, but that’s because I wrote the setup in #Saltstack instead of just typing commands. Also, setting up #Postgres and a resizable volume complicated it a bit further.
Now waiting for #Element’s support to provide me the data dumps, keys etc. from my #EMS instance they are currently still hosting.
If I didn’t need to import existing Synapse data, I probably would’ve gone with #Dendrite.
@Nour@tek_dmn#Cloudflare sees everything that happens on the matrix·org server, so there’s that. Speaking of CF, #Element has also put their website under control of the web’s police (Cloudflare indeed). Which makes them despicable enough even before the OP’s revelation.
@hywan I don't know why they're banning this client. #Matrix is not a vendor-lock-in service, banning #Element would not stop users accessing it. This is different from WhatsApp or others.
