restaurant in is in . The one-time mining boom town is atop the Continental Divide about 200 miles south of the Canadian border. ..about as far from a traditional as you can get. Established in 1911 by Tam Kwong Yee and his business partner, Hum Yow -- both 1st-generation -- occupies a nondescript brick building on the only remaining block of what was once a bustling Chinatown.

I love taking photos of busy Chinatown shops. The things arranged haphazardly, the prices, the writing.. it all makes me feel very at home!

Some black and white film photos of the typographic signs around SF Chinatown

I really like the engraved or embossed brush script of Chinese temples and association signs and want to find out more about how they're made.

The monthly Chinatown Night Market in SF seems to be getting even more popular! Long lines for food and boba. AA Bakery with their flower cupcakes is a favorite.

A pastry chef wearing a backwards, black, baseball cap, and blue gloves is decorating a cupcake with frosting in the shape of a flower.

I can’t finish a single slice of ‘American cheesecake’ but I can eat a whole ‘Japanese cheesecake’ from yummy bakery in Chinatown. I like fluffy textures, light flavors, and very very little sugar. The egg white egg tarts are also great. And the butter cream buns

Head over to 51 East Pender Street in #VancouverBC #Chinatown & you’ll find the #historic Wing Sang Building—home of #Canada’s first #ChineseCanadian #Museum. While it may look unassuming from the streets, the inside features three floors of contemporary gallery space shrouded in period brick, a call from the past.

The last of the elders and storytellers, Wellington Lee, has passed away. Old enough to have been around when John Steinbeck was writing East of Eden. Somehow, Steinbeck's fictional vision of the neighborhood is what the public tends to remember. But it barely cracked the surface of what was. Bon Voyage, Wellington. . .

I'll be doing a solo protest short march & then standing at front of #VictoriaBC #Chinatown harmonious gates in #solidarity with #Gaza & #Palestinians in March.

I'll post date & time here, at least 2-3 days before I go do my solo solidarity action. I'll be ready to take on questions from random public on why I feel it's important for every individual, on #VancouverIsland & everywhere, globally, to #StepUp & #TakeAction - wherever & whenever they can.

I believe in #PowerOfThePeople & live it🙌

NEW: San Francisco's Chinese New Year Parade is this Saturday and there's a brand new dragon for the parade finale, celebrating the Year of the Dragon. For over a century, this parade has served as a means of civic engagement for Chinatown to combat stereotypes and to tell the Chinese-American story.

I'm loving the book "Denison Avenue", by Christina Wong and Daniel Innes.

A Toronto story told in prose and illustration, about aging in place, grief, gentrification, and vulnerable Chinese Canadian elders.
