FOSS - ensuring even new hardware stays in use when vendor-support eventually ends!
Whether or not you install GNU/Linux on it today, your new #Mac will eventually lose #Apple support. Thanks to the impressive work of #Asahi#Linux project (@AsahiLinux), it will not need to end up in the landfill once it does.
Let's take a task like "uncompressing a file".
It's clear that a Raspi is uncompressing slower than a new and shiny Thinkpad.. but the Thinkpad also uses much more power. Who is more energy efficient?
The article compares the energy efficiency of ARM/x86/RISC-V/AppleSilicon. The created framework can be used to easily compare energy efficiency of other tasks, i.e. kernel compilation.
AppleSilicon with #asahi#fedora remix shines for the uncompress task I looked at.
Today is day one of Texas Linux Fest! Come say hi at our booth and be on the lookout for three great talks from Fedora contributors @Conan_Kudo, @carlwgeorge, and David Duncan.
I wish there was a portable, usb-run version of #Asahi#Linux for Silicon Macs. More people would try it out and actually use it that way, if it was easy and risk-free to their #MacOS partition. The current way to do that is two whole pages of arcane commands on a terminal. It needs automation.
#macbookair M2: triple boot with sonoma, #nixos and #Fedora#Asahi, I am missing the sound with nixos but cheese can use the webcam while under #fedora the sound card is ok, but not the webcam!
What is your personal preference based on experience? I Assume because Mac is Unix and Linux is Unix based, it would be more suited, but I have no personal experience with the layout. I am willing to try something new if i hear enough merits for it, and I also find the windows layout somewhat inadequate(The grass is greener on...
@Semi@kbin.social @Artemis_Mystique Well, maybe the problems the students are facing are due to all of the software that the school uses being incompatible with apple. (Knowing how apple loves to be incompatible themselves, I guess that's quite logical).
And I am sure an experienced user can find workarounds to get the computer to work properly. (#asahilinux being the first thing that comes to my mind, though I never tried #asahi personally because I don't want to contribute to apple's e-waste)
Hey, @AsahiLinux!
My company asked me to write a blogpost to be put on our website, detailing what Asahi is, how it started, and what impact could it have on software development business in the future.
Would you like to fact check such blogpost, maybe give your own few words to be put in it, and maybe, just maybe, do a short video interview?
Would be thrilled!
Please, repost this, so Asahi team sees this 🙏 #linux#asahi#apple#silicon#arm#interview#blogpost
Ich habe auf meinem Mac Mini M1 #fedora#asahi#linux installiert und den Prozess mit vielen Screenshots und Fotos dokumentiert. Es hat alles überraschend problemlos funktioniert.
Is it worth buying the Mac keyboard for a dedicated Linux PC instead of the windows one?
