Alright, I'm not normally a person who talks about my dreams, but I usually have cinematic dreams and this one didn't have an ending, and I need your creativity.

I dreamed I was working at a Mental Health Institution. We were having some kind of government inspection, it seemed really off, they were paying special attention to certain patients. I inadvertently found out that they were from some shadowy organization, and they believed that certain people who had schizophrenia and delusions were actually seeing into alternate realities, and they were planning on taking them for training of some kind. It surprised me so much, that it actually woke me up, and I couldn't finish the dream. What would they use this for and why? Help me finish this in my brain!

@RickiTarr Reminds me a little bit of Stephen King’s The Institute, where kids with a small amount of psychic power are shut away in a clinic and experimented on for a secret government programme. Some people think that psychosis is a kind of psychic power…

@purplepadma Oh interesting

@RickiTarr if we think of it as an idea for a film, how about this.
You keep having dreams about random scenarios. But here and there you return to that dream. You have moved out of the mental institute, to continue treatment of the patients that got "recruited" by that agency. You work for them now, caring for the health of the patients in between sessions of "alternate reality viewings".

Then you start to notice that some of the patients appear in other of your dreams, acting like regular people.

In the agency dreams you begin to inquire the nature of the agency after one of the patients seems to remember you from one of your other dreams.

Finally, in your investigation you find among the patient files one about you, saying that you're one of the recruited patients, suffering from identity delusions, believing to be a doctor treating them. And recorded details about all of the alternate realities you saw on the sessions. One of these realities is your "actual reality".

@efesjotaseles Fuck that's good!

@RickiTarr you wake up!
Sweating, agitated. You go through your day anxious, unable to stop thinking about all of it. When some disturbed person approaches you, screaming for help. Scared as heck, you witness how a bunch of men in black grab them, push them into an unmarked ban, and drive away in a hurry.
This individual managed to yell something right before the door closed shut: they cried for help and called by your name.

There is an agency in the "actual reality" doing the same thing the one from your mental institute dreams. Dreams you realize are not actual dreams, but alternate realities you've been seeing all along.

@efesjotaseles Oh dang!!!

@RickiTarr The project you talk about is government project codename "Sandman".

Agent 32hyphen Alpha can fill you in.

Agent 32-A: Greetings. Project 128011-1.76B, or codename Sandman is a project discovered when one Justin Roiland, in an attempt to produce a television show after his fail pitch of a sentient dog program (no really, that's real) discovered the concept of a one - Rick Sanchez.

Now, unaware of the temporal phenomena in Hollywood called - Fake it till you Make it, Roiland manifested this concept into existence in which there are infinite realities with varying degrees of the same population. This allowed for many new inventions to see fruition in our lifetimes. As we have become aware of these timelines we work with others, such as yourself, from when they discover this ability and use them to help us track down the most optimal people to put into the most optimal timelines.

@RickiTarr how's that?

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@mentallyalex I love it

@RickiTarr the Fringe approach (aka Massive Dynamics): to steal technology and sell it in our world.

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@skribe That is the most likely scenario unfortunately

skribe,
@skribe@aus.social avatar

@RickiTarr no, I don't think so. Other good options include:

  • Having a series of 'test worlds' for weapons, pharmaceuticals, or whatever.
  • The head(s) of the programme could have certain 'itches' that are difficult to scratch in our world.
  • Human trafficking
  • Drug trafficking
  • Why bother stealing technology when you can go straight to the source and steal money, gold, or other monetary units?

I'm sure I could come up with more.

@RickiTarr The truth is that the patients under investigation have the latent ability to open portals into a parallel universe, and the government are hoping to tap into that ability as a way of rescuing humanity from a failing Earth without colonising space. In a shocking plot twist, the patients realise that they are being closely observed, assume that it is for nefarious reasons, object to being exploited, and instead sneak away at midnight with their friends and pets to find a better world.

@MintSpies Ohhh goosebumps, that's good

@RickiTarr Stanislav Lem's biography talked about working in an asylum during the third Reich.

@RickiTarr I had a stranger dream lately. I was in a store that sold BOOKS. The walls were all shelves full of BOOKS. The employees all read and talked about BOOKS. I have yet to come back to reality after that disturbing dream.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@RickiTarr DARPA did paranormal research. Jon Ronson's "Men who stare at goats" that documentary fits this

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@rrb Oh yeah I could see that.

elverkonge,
@elverkonge@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr A real shadowy organization would only use this to either predict the market or spying on other countries (assuming a large degree of correspondence to alternate realities), or gaining technological advantage (for dissimilar parallels).

Rather boring, but I think that would be the actuality of the situation. Cynic's perspective, of course

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@elverkonge That totally makes sense

@Alice Oh no, not again

Ludo,
@Ludo@mastodon.scot avatar

@RickiTarr sounds a little bit like that Tom Cruise film, minority report?

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@Ludo I love that movie, but I don't think they could see the future, just that what was happening to them in other realities was different than their own and it was creating this dissonance

Ludo,
@Ludo@mastodon.scot avatar

@RickiTarr oooh! Maybe they were finding solutions in alternate realities to things that are broken in this one... like climate change/habitat loss/ out of control capitalism/that annoying thing when your sock falls down inside your boot?

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@Ludo Oh that I like, because you could see subtle or large differences in the Universe. One detail from the dream was that they were looking specifically for people who could converse with their delusions, so that would track.

Ludo,
@Ludo@mastodon.scot avatar

@RickiTarr keep us posted if any of them come up with exciting solutions in future dreams. Personally quite interested in the sock thing
