I’m so effing tired

What states and the EU ought to do - facilitate cross border travel in a green way - they’re abjectly failing to do (see today’s SNCF (state owned railway) saga)

What they’re instead doing is racist passenger profiling and eroding (Bundespolizei controlling anyone with dark skin at Offenburg)

@jon I also had a weird experience last year. I was on a train from Austria to Italy, passing through Slovenia.
As I was heading out a Roma woman was being controlled by two policemen, one from Italy other from Germany. She spoke in German with the German officer, and showed her papers on the phone. The German officer told she was good to go. But the Italian one told she need a physical document to enter Italy. So she had to leave the train.

What I found weird is that:

  1. She was the only one checked, Roma, BIPoC.
  2. Two policemen, from different countries, has different opinions.

@mihira point 2. might be right. ID law is a dog’s dinner - while the EU sets the framework what document is allowed varies. The French law even contradicts itself.

That doesn’t excuse the bad behaviour though of course.

@jon @mihira European Digital ID is something that the EU is working on atm. It’s supposed to include:

"The right of every person eligible for a national ID card to have a digital identity that is recognised anywhere in the EU”

@sumek @mihira Sorry but I’m too jaundiced by now to hope that’ll improve matters much. Apologies!

@jon I had an interesting discussion with.an SNCF colleague who claimed that information sharing is bad and that as a private company since 2015 they weren't able to do this to prevent competitive advantage to others while then talking about SNCF as being state owned.

I felt there was a touch of the L'État c'est moi about this

@wnd it hasn’t changed. SNCF is like a company when it suits them, and it’s a state monopoly when it suits them. Which in both cases is pretty much the opposite from when each would suit the customers.

@jon I'm sure they have "specific intelligence" right?

@falken Ha. I bet that’s what they’d tell someone enquiring. But no.
