So there's an award-winning film named Snow In Midsummer that's widely discussed in Taiwan and elsewhere at the moment, it's about Malaysia's 13th May racial riots, an event that my mom experienced firsthand and which is only discussed in hushed tones. Not sure if it'll ever be aired in Malaysia.
@rakyat ahh, i'd love to watch this. my father was right in the heart of the race riots... and he was quite reticent about it. I only knew that they had to stretch the rice, can't open windows for fear of being shot and that's all I knew... other than "don't talk about race" and definitely stock piling food during elections.
@geraineon Yeah everyone breathed a sigh of relief when our first change of government eventually happened without bloodshed (though apparently Najib did try to stir some violence/chaos).
He didn't live to see that, but he was there for the election before and I remember there were a lot of tension the day and night of, and the day after... and i do remember hearing that Najib tried to stir violence/chaos (I was already in the U.S. at that time)
Anyway, although the government(s) will never acknowledge this event other than some vague mention of "some racial riot happened, so it's important for the minorities not to provoke the majority", my Chinese and Indian teachers in secondary school did risk telling us about it to make sure that the memory would not die with their generation.
