if anything is gonna be the straw that breaks the camels back and ACTUALLY makes for a 'this year is the year of linux on the desktop', its gonna be stuff like this

@Viss I’m sure it’s too big to fail 😭

@Viss I mean, Microsoft can be excused for this kind of security breach, no?

They're only a little mom-and-pop service provider, not a global corporation with a $2.97 trillion market cap or anything... they don't have the cash to have a serious go at their technical debt or anything.

@Viss Except for: Corporate allergies to Linux, and consumer cluelessness. (I have some relatives who I've pulled up their computer that they had SO MANY VIRUSES from clicking on untrustworthy links, emails, etc. you couldn't close all the scam popups... and they just kept on using those massively compromised computers.. my advice: "uh, just buy a new computer and throw that away, that can't be fixed")

@ai6yr @Viss have you ever tried walking someone through something on their screen then suddenly saw them absent mindedly clicking "ok" on all the popup windows?

@grumpasaurus @ai6yr @Viss Parental controls for parents is what I always say, lol.

@grumpasaurus @ai6yr the first five years of my career were in tech support. first for dialup, then for dsl, then later for massive enterprise grade finance software (fico). i have had to explain "how to look at something" to people who made 5x my salary, as well as grandmothers.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@grumpasaurus @Viss 😬 ... yes. Also, similarly seen some older, clueless folks getting scam texts and they are responding to them 😬

@ai6yr google dumped windows outright after the aurora incident

@ai6yr @Viss Any recommendations for AV ? https://mastodon.social/@deewani/112368116344186422. I used to be fam tech support, restoring infected PCs to factory & reinstalling Windows for them… But I am out of the loop and now regret not learning Linux when I had the time.

@deewani @Viss I worry now that their BIOS or UEFI is permanently compromised. At the very least, their boot sectors.

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @deewani so far as i can tell, bootkits and firmware level backdoors are almost exclusively used against enterprise and .gov tier targets.

the various apt groups that are out there dont want to burn their precious kits and 0day on grandma.
