I don't like reading from an ereader - I'm one of those old-school people who prefer actual paper books - but I can no longer use a reading light in bed because it'll wake up the kid. An ereader with a backlight would be better. But I don't buy books on Amazon. What's your favorite non-Kindle reader that you've actually used?

@ben Boox is good.

@ben Have you tried one of those small LED lights that clips to the book? I would have thought that was unlikely to wake anyone sleeping nearby.

BTW I'm with you in shunning Amazon where possible.

@underlap That's what I have. My experimentation suggests the ambient light does wake him up - although it might just be that the specific model I have is just too bright. I might look into dimmer lights, too.

@ben @underlap one of my top youngster tips is red lights (we used Hues + switches that allowed regular light during the day but red at nigh). Allows you to get stuff done and makes it easier for them to go back to sleep after they (inevitably) wake.

If you have to buy a new tech toy, I’d strongly recommend that first and then an ereader only second.

@ben @underlap if you do decide to go with e-reader, I like but am not passionately endorsing my Boox Page: https://lu.is/2024/02/boox-page-a-review/

@ben I use Kobo. It uses EPUB instead of the Kindle format.

You can convert the formats easily using and a couple of plugins.
