Must-read reporting by +972 on how the IDF are using “AI” in their indiscriminate murder in Gaza. It’s horrific, and we must not look away. And it’s an absolute nightmare of the usual sorts of AI harms cranked up to the extreme: mass surveillance, "we don't have any choice but to automate", AI as pretext for deadly violence.

It's not just the ridiculousness of deferring to AI, it's the basis of those matches which is terrible (weak associations) and worst of all that to hit one of those suspected militants, the deaths of up to twenty innocents is accepted as perfectly ok.

This is why so many families have been targeted without any concern, and what has lead to the blood lust wreckless on aid workers.

#Israel is committing mass murder in #Gaza with no humanity or regard for the law.

@emilymbender "AI" is the new "shell coorporation" for all those who want to shun responsibility for outright illegal or socially unpalatable actions.

Sexism? "The AI picked the best"
Racism? "The AI did that, its naive"
Genocide? "The AI chose the targets"

pa27,

AI is a marketing term. These pieces of software are not AI. We should stop glorifying the use by using this name. At best Israel has some targeting software that is clearly dumb, and it's users dumber and dangerous, especially if they are led to think the machine is intelligent.

@pa27 yes, I'm well aware. Hence the scare quotes.

"... according to the sources, when it came to targeting alleged junior militants marked by Lavender, the army preferred to only use unguided missiles, commonly known as “dumb” bombs (in contrast to “smart” precision bombs), which can destroy entire buildings on top of their occupants and cause significant casualties. “You don’t want to waste expensive bombs on unimportant people" ..."

"the Israeli army systematically attacked the targeted individuals while they were in their homes — usually at night while their whole families were present ... from ... an intelligence standpoint, it was easier to locate the individuals in their private houses. Additional automated systems, including one called “Where’s Daddy?” ... were used specifically to track the targeted individuals and carry out bombings when they had entered their family’s residences."

martinvermeer,

@DropBear @emilymbender @palestine Pretty, pretty cynical... I note that soldiers on leave are protected as non-combatants by the Geneva Conventions. Now, Hamas gunmen are not soldiers. But unless they are known to have been involved, or are preparing to be involved, in actual terrorism personally, they should be treated the same way. Carrying a gun for Hamas should not make you a target when you're not actually carrying that gun and sleeping at home with your family...

I'm waiting for the day when they're going to pass on accountability for "collateral damage" to AI / Lavender.

It appears that "Lavender" and “Where’s Daddy?” might be hosted on Amazon and Google servers.

"Project Nimbus is a controversial $1.2 billion cloud computing and AI agreement between the Israeli government and two tech companies: Google and Amazon. Reports in the Israeli press have previously indicated that Google and Amazon are contractually barred from preventing specific arms of the Israeli state using their technology under Project Nimbus. But this is the first time the existence of a contract showing that the Israeli Ministry of Defense is a Google Cloud customer has been made public."

"In midtown Manhattan on March 4, Google’s managing director for Israel, Barak Regev, was addressing a conference promoting the Israeli tech industry when a member of the audience stood up in protest. “I am a Google Cloud software engineer, and I refuse to build technology that powers genocide, apartheid, or surveillance,” shouted the protester,"
...
"TIME spoke to five current and five former Google workers for this story, many of whom described a growing sense of anger at the possibility of Google aiding Israel in its war in Gaza."
