when you sail from
Bellingham for Alaska, the AMHS ferries steam right through Canada without stopping, so passengers and crew are treated to this day with a steady, peaceful glide through the islands & no ports of call. people get lulled by the scenery and the company into a uniquely soft and relaxed state, spending the hours sightseeing, doing puzzles, writing, reading, and, like this fella in the solarium with us right now, taking hella luxurious ✨naps✨ #FerriesMoveAlaska
@BetaCuck4Lyfe@seachanger pretty good odds of that on any tall ship, too ;) even better odds if you count the creative swearing from aloft to be poetry
@seachanger I've traveled on the Kennicott and mostly on the Columbia, mostly camping on deck chairs in the solarium in the summer, I just remembered a couple of brown bears getting spooked, then playing, chasing alongside the ferry on the shore. They're really really fast. Thanks for sharing a breath of fresh wind
calm seas on the open ocean south of Haida Gwaii yesterday, enjoyed them from a sheltered nook on the sun deck level in t-shirt and sandals. quite the contrast with the fierce storm we powered through on my way south on the Columbia in November!
On the northbound WA-AK passage you usually get 5 hrs to explore scenic Ketchikan. We like to hike straight up from the ferry terminal to Carlonna Lake Trail and as far up the snowy ridges as we can get.
Today I hiked in a t-shirt & was shocked to see so little snow—compare the waterfall partway up this trail with the same photo I took April 15th of 2023. Will Lingít Aaní get more snow this year? Hope so but the spring sun today sure feels warm 😬#akwx #FerriesMoveAlaska
More pics from this morning’s hike in Ketchikan - really one of my fave SE AK hikes you can walk to from town, even without the snow! #akwx#FerriesMoveAlaska
i find the earnest zissou-cousteau aesthetic of alaska ferries enhances the meditative/creative quality of the voyage. you’re surrounded by ever-changing blue-green vistas yet peering out at and into them from a white-rust ship peppered with bronze and turquoise patinas, bright shiny red accents, classic nautical shapes, and omnipresent soft cornered windows. you’re moving forward yet frozen in other seafaring eras, always invited to gaze at a changing world in old/new ways #FerriesMoveAlaska
@seachanger I love seeing your photographic perspective and eye! So interesting. I’ve been on that ferry so many times and never noticed this glorious juxtaposition
@seachanger I was at the BC Ferries terminal in Prince Rupert on Monday. It looked like there was some activity at the Marine Highways terminal! I sure hope they add PR as a regular port again! I would love to jump on from PR.
@seachanger I guess what I'm really saying is the north coast is all very geographically close, but having to travel south or around up into the yukon makes it difficult to form community.
@seachanger Polite request for many ferry updates and pictures. This trip is on my bucket list. I started following you on your journey south last fall. Best wishes for a smooth voyage north!
