This is PCalc running as a native Apple Vision Pro app (rather than running the existing iPadOS app as before).

@jamesthomson Weirdly I’m much more interested in seeing Dice :)

Moltz,
@Moltz@mastodon.social avatar

@danhon @jamesthomson We were just talking about that! I think James is as well.

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@Moltz @danhon Dice is more of an interesting application for a 3D headset :)

twasink,
@twasink@aus.social avatar

@jamesthomson @Moltz @danhon don’t forget About PCalc (by PCalc). That would be a great immersive app

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@twasink @Moltz @danhon It would, although it's built with SceneKit specific stuff like the car handling physics and that will be harder to move over to RealityKit.

RMKrug,

@jamesthomson Lovely - but I would suggest portrait and covering the door. And showing the settings, opens the door.

abhibeckert,
@abhibeckert@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson Maybe it's time to add voice input to PCalc?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@abhibeckert Perhaps, yes!

gcanyon,

@jamesthomson The obvious question to me (and I haven't gone through the WWDC sessions, forgive me if this is obvious) is: how do you use this? Eye tracking is awesome, but "eye + finger tap" for every single digit seems like a clear non-starter. This isn't your problem to solve, but I'm wondering if Apple has thought of this? Or are users expected to say "forty-two squared times the cosine of 30"?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@gcanyon I think you can also directly interact with elements by tapping them. Or, you could have a keyboard paired with it.

godofbiscuits,
@godofbiscuits@sfba.social avatar

@jamesthomson I'm wondering if -- and I have much optimism that -- hand tracking will be accurate and precise enough that this version of PCalc can used with your hands -- as in reaching out and tapping the buttons directly?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@godofbiscuits I think that would work, but no knowing until there’s a real device to test on.

stevecrandall,
@stevecrandall@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson I can’t afford a Vision Pro early on, but it’s nice to know I’d buy one if I could. PCalc is a gating app here.

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@stevecrandall Thanks!

danhall,

@jamesthomson slow down! You'll make everyone else look bad

acf,
@acf@masto.alancfrancis.com avatar

@jamesthomson how do they simulate you having to choose buttons with your eyes?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@acf Just by clicking on stuff with the mouse. I haven’t seen an alternative as yet.

acf,
@acf@masto.alancfrancis.com avatar

@jamesthomson that’s one of the hmmmmm’s I have about everyone developing apps with the simulator (where you can click). Are people going to design experiences that suck when using eyes. Seems a much bigger distinction than on a phone simulator 🤔 guess we’ll see :)

whophd,
@whophd@ioc.exchange avatar

@jamesthomson maths is big and scary

is this sort of thing going to look like an old trope in 10 years?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@whophd Good question!

infinimitsu,

@jamesthomson I really want to get into AVP development but I've never messed with Apple stuff before. Is there a free way to get into tinkering or does it require the $99 Apple dev fee? Also, can I tinker from a PC or do I need a mac?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@infinimitsu You can do some stuff with just Xcode, but if you want to put anything on the store you need to pay the $99. 99% sure you need a Mac, but maybe some game stuff will work via Unity.

infinimitsu,

@jamesthomson Looks like I need to surf FB marketplace for a used Mac then...

linnefaulk,

@jamesthomson do you live in a model apartment?

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@linnefaulk No, it's a virtual environment in Xcode :)

rrgeorge,

@jamesthomson How about Dice? I imagine it will be pretty awesome.

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@rrgeorge Working on it!

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@rrgeorge It will take more work to get that running native, but so far everything is running fun as an iPad app on it.

rrgeorge,

@jamesthomson I saw your other post after I sent my reply 😆. Looks awesome as is. Can’t wait to see it native.

gobert,
@gobert@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson nice!!!! I’m getting tons of errors trying to run my app natively.

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

@gobert I had to comment a bunch of stuff out, but it worked in the end!

gobert,
@gobert@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson good to know! I didn’t try to fix yet but good to know I’m not seeing anything unusual. Btw…Saw you on MBW 🫡

jamesthomson,
@jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @jamesthomson where are the bananas

    jamesthomson,
    @jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @joesteel Off to the side, you just can't see them.

    JustMeDevin,
    @JustMeDevin@mastodon.social avatar

    @jamesthomson is your settings view SwiftUI or UIKit? I’m not clear on how we get the material effect, are you doing anything specific here?

    jamesthomson,
    @jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @JustMeDevin It's UIKit, the app is running in Vision Pro mode though.

    JustMeDevin,
    @JustMeDevin@mastodon.social avatar

    @jamesthomson I must have something custom messing with mine, can’t get rid of the solid background colours on cells. Thanks 😊

    Gte,
    @Gte@mastodon.social avatar

    @jamesthomson Show us the about screen!

    bjarratt,

    @jamesthomson are those virtual environments that come with the dev kit or do you just live in an abandoned Ikea?

    jamesthomson,
    @jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @bjarratt It's simulated environments in the Vision Pro simulator.

    bjarratt,

    @jamesthomson nice, makes perfect sense.

    stvmln,

    @jamesthomson I cannot wait to see the About page.

    schwa,
    @schwa@mastodon.social avatar

    @jamesthomson Yes but what about your SceneKit dice… oh awkward.

    jamesthomson,
    @jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa At least I have RealityKit kinda working there, and the iPad app is fine.

    schwa,
    @schwa@mastodon.social avatar

    @jamesthomson kinda working sounds right.

    jon_alper,
    @jon_alper@mastodon.online avatar

    @jamesthomson Not being a wise ass with my usual ‘more bananas’ jokes… really pondering. I wonder if there will be ways to ‘leave the calculator on the counter’ at some point. Even to have it persist there between sessions in a given room. So, it remembers my kitchen, where I stuck the PCalc and, if I put it on the living room, it would remember where I ‘keep it’ in that room….

    barijaona,

    @jon_alper @jamesthomson Imagine having vintage objects on the counter of your kitchen…

    jamesthomson,
    @jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @barijaona @jon_alper IAP nostalgia!

    jamesthomson,
    @jamesthomson@mastodon.social avatar

    @jon_alper A good question, I'm not sure yet!

    alexmcroberts,

    @jamesthomson @jon_alper I’m pretty sure they talked about that at WWDC during the announcement- about object persistence in the same physical location across multiple “sessions” (my wording) of wearing the device

    calimarkus,
    godofbiscuits,
    @godofbiscuits@sfba.social avatar

    @jamesthomson @jon_alper I'm pretty sure there is. There was a WWDC talk about location anchors where it mentions that visionOS will remember your anchors in a given scene/world (whatever they're called), but it's up to the dev to store/restore the asset attached to the anchor. And the anchor knows its specific coords within a given space.

    neilster,

    @jamesthomson @jon_alper ...and if you need it but you are in another room you should be able to summon it like Thors hammer
