oceane,

Mastodon is hard to self-host, which leads to too few instances with open registrations. Gargron's solution is to redirect everyone on his one million users server.

At the moment the 419 instances having signed the have 387,191 users, i.e. 4% of the total number of users and 27% of the number of monthly active users (MAU) (I give both numbers because we can expect these users to be more committed to the fediverse, so more active, than lingering mastodon.social accounts)

In order to we need to give to @bonfire and to speed up their development now!

  • oceane,

@ncrav “Self” means “at home”, not “for yourself alone”… microblog.pub is a cool project but if you can make something cool with it you can selfhost and design a website, or pay technicians and creatives to do it for you. This isn't related to my OP, and with all due respect, you just mansplained me. It doesn't make you a “bad” or “worse” person, this isn't Twitter, but please don't assume that I don't know the ActivityPub server software you know.

@oceane the intent was only to give more alternatives, not to reduce/change in any way what you said, but I'll remove my post since it had the opposite effect, sorry.

    oceane,

@ncrav Lol, I think you may have overreacted a bit by deleting your message.

Mansplaining sure feels like an issue e.g. at work, or at home, but here, honestly, speaking as a trans woman, with little experience of it, it didn't feel obnoxious or anything. Just slightly sexist. I'd rather worry about the erasure of Black people's voices here and in our software and instances governance, with all due respect.

Like my own reply was apparently problematic in many ways, that are indirectly related to nominal assignation (Bourdieu, 1986), the assumption that people's identities would be coherent across time and contexts. IMHO it's a control device by the State and State capitalism through e.g. your resume and your criminal record, with apparently no scientific relevance. I didn't mean to trigger that and maybe if our activism has this should be considered as a problem, because it ultimately serves the ultra-rich.

I may also have overreacted because I've replied to a tech journalist splaining a Google employee, then he proceded to mansplain me again, and then it's still my own (emotional) responsibility (if you watch Marshall Rosenberg's conferences). I'm sorry for having implied that “you” were wrong, it wasn't my intent, and it isn't my way of thinking. But it's most people's and I should be more careful about that.

If you'd bothered me so much, I'd have muted you. It was just an information. You probably want to be more careful about that so I told you that it was mansplaining, I trust your own processing of this information. (It's still my responsibility not to derail this conversation into the game of “who's right and who's wrong”, and it wasn't my intent.)

    oceane,

@ncrav So to give you an example, this is mansplaining, and this is bad: https://oslo.town/@matias/110580543986605065

Your post was just slightly inappropriate but really not a big deal, we all do mistakes, and we're all coping with an extremely violent way of allocating abundant resources the way we can. “Check your privilege” doesn't mean “everything is fine in your life, you aren't suffering at all from capitalism, so you shouldn't complain”. It means that you aren't aware of people's daily experience of an oppression. This isn't the current topic, just an example, but it wouldn't mean that you would be a bad person.

@oceane understood and yes I may have overreacted as well when trying to defuse any possible harm. You're correct and I'll be more careful in the future in my interactions.

    jdp23,

@oceane very interesting numbers, thanks for highlighting the difference between the MAU and total users! Agreed that it's a great opportunity to support and accelerate other non-Mastodon implementations.
