I wanted to try out that color wheel thing I've been seeing. I considered Edward Elric but decided to go back to my roots. So here's my girl Harley in her OG (best) costume!
I dunno if I'll actually continue with the other colors. I guess we'll see.
For orange, I did Velma! Possibly the character who awoken my love for nerdy girls. I'm worried I didn't make her look nerdy enough, though. That's something I'mma have to work on.
But I loved the opportunity to play around with translating her into a different style. It's definitely not her iconic haircut, but I think it works, too.
I did Wolverine for yellow! It's probably been almost 10 years since I last drew him, but he used to be one of my favorite characters to draw.
I also had to rotate the wheel a bit. I didn't think far ahead enough to draw Harley looking to the left, so now she didn't fit the composition I wanted. So instead of just flipping her (making her colors wrong), I just rotated the whole thing so she'd be in the middle.
I did Toph for green! Unfortunately, I'm not entirely happy with how this one turned out. I did not know what I was doing with this pose 😅
I didn't want to just copy an existing illustration, so I looked up some Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis poses since I knew that's what her fighting style is based on. However, my reference photo was at a different angle.
Anyway, I'll just leave it as is because I don't wanna work on it anymkre. I'll just cover her right hand with my next character 😅
I did Alphonse Elric for cyan, and it turned out surprisingly well! I still hate drawing mechanical stuff, though. I can only imagine how much of a pain he must have been to animate in the anime.
Cyan characters were pretty slim pickings, and I didn't want to just do Hatsune Miku like I've seen everybody do. So I had to really up the saturation on Alphonse to show that he actually is cyan.
For blue, I didn't even think twice. It was only ever gonna be my boy Phoenix! I would have put Edgeworth in red, too, but I didn't want to have more than one character from the same IP. It kinda feels weird, though, since Phoenix is usually facing the other way when he does this pose.
It's been a few days, but here's Raven for purple! Yet another one of my childhood crushes. Probably the character that awakened my love for goth girls. I'm not entirely sure I'm happy with how I depicted her magic, though.
And finally, here's Sweetheart from Omori for Magenta! Unlike the other characters here, she doesn't really hold a special place in my heart, but I just thought she'd be a unique character that not a lot of people would think of for this challenge. It was also just cool to have someone with a different complexion (other than Raven or Harley who wears white makeup).
I thought about Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time, who is actually a favorite of mine, but her art style would be too different from everyone else. I also considered Madoka, but I've already seen a ton of people do her for this color, and I wanted to do something different.
There were a few ups and downs during this challenge, but I'm happy to end somewhat strongly as I'm really happy with how she turned out.
Here's the final wheel! I didn't really change much from my previous post. I just made some teeny tiny adjustments. I thought about adding decorations and sprucing it up like I've seen other people do, but I'm not really good at that 😅
Overall, I learned a lot from this challenge. I learned that I really need to practice anatomy and drawing faces from different angles 😅. I also still really suck at lighting.
Still, I'm mostly happy with how it turned out. I'd love to do this challenge again in the future.
