This instance handles, on average, 6.5 reports of antisemitism a day.

Why is that significant? It's significant because Babka already suspends individual accounts, and Limits entire instances.

Despite this, we deal with ~6.5 new antisemitic accounts per day.

And yet, if we look at the graphs from Fediverse Observer, the number of active users on the Fediverse has gone down!

So what exactly does that mean, if the number of antisemitic accounts continues to grow and the number of active users continues to shrink?

It means that the number of antisemites on the Fediverse is quite large, and what we're seeing isn't new antisemites as much as it is antisemitism being so normalized that people feel comfortable spouting hate, and that despite blocking or silencing thousands of accounts, hate continues to be emboldened.

@serge

It matches what Black fediverse users have been saying in the same period.

Why are people so bad at regulating their speech, at recognizing their own biases, and at curing their racism?

@aka_quant_noir

Ultimately we all have biases and blind spots. We can educate, we can teach empathy and connection and sharing.

Hate speech still hurts though.

@serge I do think that's reflective of our society at large. That folks are feeling more empowered, more safe, in letting that part of their id out to play.

Which is yet another reason I have to drink and try to ignore the world in my off-hours.

Antisemitism is on the rise. That is not only becoming visible in the fedi.

Another thing that is becoming visible is that people are calling opposition to illegal settlements, opposition to proceedings in Gaza, and opposition to the current political path of the Israeli government "antisemitism".

I have never witnessed so much open antisemitism. I've also never witnessed so many Jewish folks being accused of or blocked for antisemitism.

So I'd ask: What do you block people for?

serge,
@serge@babka.social avatar

@Fluse

Opposition to Israeli policies is not antisemitism on its own, and this is obvious because Israel has elections.

That said, often this "criticism" is paired with antisemitism. It will look something like:

Look at the actions of these settler in the West Bank and the way they attacked this Palestinian man! This is typical of the bloodthirsty Nazi Zionist mindset, indiscriminately targeting children. We don't hear about it in the Media... I wonder why!!!"

Then when someone says "Hey that's antisemitic" the poster cries about being silenced about Palestine, rather than take ownership over the hate speech.

Plenty of Jews, and plenty of Zionists are not in favor of many Israeli governmental policies.

Sadly we often feel we can't talk about that, because when we do, we're tokenized, "Even the Jews admit...."

It leaves us with very little room for self-expression.

@serge what exactly constitutes anti-semitism here? i see from your timeline that you believe “from the river to the sea” is a call for violence against jews, even though A) many palestinian activists have repeatedly affirmed that it is not, and B) many diaspora jews have no connection to that land. i appreciate that your interpretation is also common, but i’m very curious whether anti-zionist jews (👋🏻) are included in your anti-semitic accounts statistic.

@jakelazaroff @mekkaokereke

There are KKK members who claim that their message of white superiority is not hate speech, and that they are not a hate group, and Neo-Nazis proudly proclaim that "White Pride" is not a chant of hate too.

We don't ask people spouting violent hate speech if they are spouting hate- we delate that to the victims, and mainstream Jewish organizations across the world have presented the obvious- that this a reference to the Second Intifada, and a call for the violent destruction of Israel, where half the world's Jews live.

So when Jews say "From the River to the Sea" is hate speech, then it need to stop. If it continues, with people knowingly using it, then whatever else someone may think or do, they're engaging in hate speech, and that's not okay.

Activists can be Pro-Palestinian without calling for the death of Jews. The fact some don't isn't on Jews to address.

@serge got it — palestinian activists are like KKK members, israeli interests are jewish interests and anti-zionists are self-hating jews. this is really disappointing, man, but i guess i got my answer.

I never said any of that, but if you want to put words in my mouth to further your antisemitism, then I ask you leave me alone.

@serge @jakelazaroff @mekkaokereke Well, there goes another block, though. The “7 different logical fallacy Fedi guy” going with projection plus some other stuff.

@serge It probably also means the not bigoted people are quitting using the platform and the bigoted people are staying. And that’s on the other admins.

tjcasser,
@tjcasser@babka.social avatar

@TonyStark @serge I wish I was as optimistic as you, Tony. I still think it's more that those who've been hiding their bigotry are more encouraged to let it come out to play...

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@tjcasser @serge Both, it seems, as I can definitely tell you people have quit over it as they feel nothing is being done and worse that the Fedi itself is fine with antisemitism and has no plans to deal with it at all. That’s what I see.

JohnLoader6,
@JohnLoader6@masto.ai avatar

@TonyStark @tjcasser @serge I see none - I do see and post anti Israel stuff but I have no concern with religion

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@JohnLoader6 @tjcasser @serge When there are Jewish people talking about antisemitism, Black people talking about anti-Black behavior, women talking about misogyny, etc., the absolutely wrong comment to make is “I don’t see any.” Not helpful. We see it and that’s the problem.
