The pill changed everything. It placed our bodies in a suspended state of early pregnancy, a time when we want to nest &fall in love with our partner. It removed incentive for couples to learn &practice ways of intimacy that don’t make babies. When sex=fucking, the rest is optional. #CulturalShift
I recognised this in the 1970s when I was polyamorous, undx #autistic 👩🏻. I saw how the pill affected my feelings toward my partners & recognised the politics of that, even then. #Empirical me then used an IUD & experienced that as conceiving then miscarrying, every month. After unwanted pregnancies using a diaphragm I spent a year learning how my body changed through my menstrual cycle (tldr I could tell by the taste of my cervical mucous, checked daily). That worked! @actuallyautistic
Painfully aware that all my chosen strategies rest on an assumption that any sex with men was always consensual. Chastened to be reminded that this is in no way the case for everyone 💔❤️🩹
My sequel - after an adventurous young adulthood, #queer#polyamorous#autistic me settled into a monogamous partnership with a cis het man (IKR?! 🤷🏼♀️) who after the birth of our second child had a vasectomy.
Men can be kind & loving. Even in a culture that teaches them otherwise.
