Why would that be?
Handguns were banned in the UK in 1997 following the 1996 Dunblane primary school shooting, which killed 16 children and their teacher (Tennis star Andy Murray was a pupil there when it happened).
A national firearms amnesty three months after the school shooting involved around 23,000 firearms being surrendered.

They tell a very instructive story, but only part of the whole.
Notably, while "assault weapons" are the most headline grabbing, it is handguns that kill far more people, but, more importantly, why the hell do Americans try to kill themselves and each other so frequently?
Any means reduction is harm reduction, and good to do, but it's not the whole of the story
@Strandjunker I hate to be the um actually person here, especially given guns really are an issue, but this is technically a correlation not proving causation problem. There could’ve been other factors that drove down mass shootings.
@Strandjunker I remember right before that ban expiration talking with my VERY JESUS LOVING right wing friend and I told her this is what was going to happen when he allowed this to expire and how could you possibly support that?
She just shrugged.
And here we are. Right where we all knew we'd be.
She still votes for Republicans gleefully twenty years later bc, church.
@Strandjunker That's just a coincidence. Only a liberal would think that allowing people to have weapons made specifically to mow down crowds and the mowing of crowds have anything to do with eachother
