Fediverse, the independent women's football team I support/volunteer for needs your help.

After a MASSIVE comeback win against a higher level team they're through in the cup.

But that means a long coach journey, and the competition grants no prize money to pay for travel.

This is an economic barrier, not a footballing one, that team's without a link to a men's team struggle to overcome. So we're crowdfunding for coach hire. /1 #mastodonFC #woso https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/cup-travel-expenses-for-distant-away-game#start

@garius It's great to see the goal blown through in what looks like well under 3 hours (slightly hard to tell when it went up, but the first donation was at 9:35 this morning)

I wish I were close enough to actually make it to a match, but I wish them all the best for their games and their community

Knitronomicon,

@garius Donated! The youth encouragement is a Thing; I went to an all-girls school & football was Never Mentioned - we got rounders and hockey and netball and tennis, but cricket would have been much more to my taste, and it might have been nice to be able to try football.

rooftopaxx,

@garius Very minor quibble with your "that team's without a link to a men's team struggle to overcome", a fanbase in the community can do that too potentially.
Veos are everywhere these days, for all of the reasons.

garius,
@garius@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@rooftopaxx there's a whole series of interlinked issues with that.

Primarily pitch access and security of tenure. Women's teams don't get long term leases, which means they struggle to build fanbase and community links.

We've just managed to secure a ten year deal to stay in Redbridge. That's HUGE for us. It allows us to start building properly in the community.

And Veo doesn't generate fandom. Proper highlights, posted to your own channel do. We're working on that.

garius,
@garius@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@rooftopaxx the issue with Veo being you're ONLY allowed to post limited highlights on your own spaces. Not full matches or extended. they have to go on Veo's arbitrary platform. So you essentially end up paying to be the product.

We're working with Hudl this year, which is pricier but gives us more freedom. As we increase our volunteer base, we'll be working to expand our digital offering giving us access to a wider online fanbase as well.

rooftopaxx,

@garius All true of course, but with very few exceptions all could be applied to non-league irrespective of mens' team only, womens' team' only or both (and in the case of both then you - as volunteers, running your club, etc - get double the burnout. And of course should your team be playing on grass the institutionalised discrimination that womens' football is played Sundat afternoons only after 3 mens' teams have finished ripping the surface up. Hey ho.

@garius Donated. Shame I don’t live in London any more but maybe I’ll see them on the telly one day. :)

garius,
@garius@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@sierrakim we actually have the tech now to do highlights and plan to add full game replays for Patreons shortly!

here's the 3-2 comeback that saw us through in the cup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sucp_4nQp60&t=3s

@sierrakim@mastodon.nz avatar

@garius I actually thought of checking for video but then assumed there was no way the club would have the resources. I shouldn’t underestimate youse. :)

I enjoyed watching the highlights and will look into the Patreon.

garius,
@garius@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@sierrakim given our budget is dwarved by that of our rivals, we have to look for differentials. one of those is analytics, so we actually pay for some serious video/AI stuff.

A side benefit being we can now start using that to do highlights/full game replays and potentially match streaming!

We're just taking it a bit slow so we get it right, rather than rush it.

@garius Sounds like you have a solid plan. Best of luck with it! Just signed up to the Patreon btw.

Last year, Seaward won their first cup as an independent women's team. It was a HUGE moment. It helped show that you don't have to be someone else's women's team to compete.

That young girls and boys can support a women's club that has its OWN name, and get to see them win.

You can find out ore about London Seaward and our values in this short FA documentary: /2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlNArPc7kLg

I may just be getting old and emotional, but I think it matters that the women's game doesn't just become a carbon copy of the men's game. Girls AND boys need female football rolemodels separate from that.

I think in a game rife with sports-washing and scandal there needs to be hope and good. Stuff that football fans can be proud of.

Seaward are that. And crowdfunding this helps further that dream. Please donate and spread the word. /END

amisamileandme,

@garius I found out recently that Canberra United are a women’s-team-only club. The city of Canberra just doesn’t have an A-League soccer team for men. Given Canberra United were the ladder up for several of the current Matilda’s side, that’s pretty damn impressive!

chriscunningham,
@chriscunningham@mastodon.social avatar

@garius similar to the Scottish women's game, where it was a breath of fresh air that the best team were Glasgow City rather than Rangers or Celtic. of course then Rangers and Celtic threw money at it

@garius should take a second to come through but I pushed this over the line.
