While the ownership class makes it daily.

'The reason It's a Wonderful Life (1946) holds up so well is that George's line, "You know how long is takes a working man to save $5000?" has somehow not aged even slightly.'

@ned But the cost of living was such that even he could afford a home and family on one salary.

ned,
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

@CStamp Yup, exactly! It's actually much worse now, not "the same".

My wages don't even cover rent anymore, and I could never save up $5,000 in a lifetime. Yet a down payment on the house I rent would cost me 5x that much. I'm over 45 with a family of 5. It's not even comparable.

MBoase,

@ned @CStamp

Yep I feel your pain 🙈Selfishness and greed, individual or national, cause most of our troubles. Endangering human life for profit should be a universal crime.

Unchecked Corporate power leads to tyranny just like unchecked Government power. Mostly the greedy rich is responsible for the poor’s poverty! Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth and whatever you feed it is never enough

Inflation is like toothpaste, once its out its really difficult to get it back in

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@MBoase @ned Oh, that's the other inflation, which has been around longer. One week it's 4.88 for 450g, the next, same price for 400g. :(

MBoase,

@CStamp @ned

There are far too many silent sufferers. Not because they don't yearn to reach out, but because they've tried and found no one who cares.I don't like injustice, I don't like suffering, I don't like inequality... I can't change the world but I can see into the heart of the other person and reach out in solidarity

@ned And yet today’s MAGAts still would consider George Bailey the elitist and Old Man Potter the working man’s hero. Because, I guess, in Pottersville the working man is encouraged to punch down on those who are worse off, while in snobby Bedford Falls, that sort of rude behavior would draw criticism.

RationalWiki,

The alkaline diet is a diet fad that started gaining popularity in around 2010, based on the notion that it's possible to alter your blood pH through a change in diet to make it more alkaline, receiving numerous health benefits. There is no scientific evidence whatsoever for the alkaline diet and there is no connection between the foods the proponents recommend and the actual pH of those foods. This craze is fueled by the fact that acidity and alkalinity are chemical concepts that people are likely to remember from school. In practice, the diet follows mainstream dietary advice mixed with high amounts of nature woo. Once someone has been convinced consuming alkaline substances is beneficial, that opens the door to selling them the hard stuff: coral.

@ned Idk, back then you could buy a house for that much money... so I'd say that's a pretty big difference in inferred meaning.

ned,
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

@LouisIngenthron Yet back then a working person could afford to buy a house.

In 1946, the US minimum wage was $0.40 an hour, so a full time job at the minimum earned $16.00 a week, $832 annually, before taxes.
Yes, it took a while.

ned,
@ned@mstdn.ca avatar

@EugestShirley Yeah, but are we left with anything more after paying our costs of living now? Just because I make $50,000/a, doesn't mean I can save up $5,000 in a lifetime.

It is as frustrating now as it was then. In the US, a big sweeping change came after WWII with the GI Bill. It was a huge change from the desperation of the 1930s.
It didn't last for long.
