The iPhone 13 mini is dead, leaving small phone lovers in a lurch

One-handed phones are a dying breed. It makes sense, but it's also a bummer.

earbeaned,

@arstechnica I just want a phone without an unbalanced camera bump.

@arstechnica

One-handed iPhones, you mean. The Android ecosystem offers anything you want. I'm typing this on a nice, comfortable Google Pixel 6A that takes amazing photos.

@arstechnica So Apple isn’t making high quality small phones anymore. I love my iPhone 13 mini, especially since some nerve nonsense made one thumb dumb. Bummed.

@arstechnica It has a terrible battery life problem. @LaurelCo has a 13mini and it doesn’t last a day. I guess they could have made it thicker and heavier.

Hopefully by the time the iPhone 18 comes out, the Mini form factor will be available again (I have a 13 Mini and find it's the perfect size for me, and don't plan on upgrading until iOS stops supporting it).

@arstechnica
@lisacrispin Have you seen this?

lisacrispin,

@arstechnica @gdinwiddie no but I knew they aren’t making more minis 😔 I’m glad I was able to fix mine. Maybe get a few more years.

@arstechnica I'm guessing that's top open the door to the iPhone SE new form factor, so maybe in March...

@arstechnica it doesn’t make sense. It’s the pathological idiocy of eternal growth running around like a toddler at a restaurant

@arstechnica that's the #plannedobsolesence part I've been squawking about all day.

What happens to them now? #landfills.. the earth thanks apple for their latest poisons.. /s

Thank you for covering this aspect of #apple.

but also no.. it doesn't make sense.. unless you're Apple and thinking about profits.

@mousey I believe planned obsolescence is absolutely real, but this article isn't about that. This is about them not manufacturing and selling the product anymore. It still gets the latest iOS and security updates. There are still parts available for repairing it (at least I hope so, since they still make the regular iPhone 13).

This change doesn't put anything in a landfill.

@tylermumford until it doesn't.

see any macbook circa 2011

unixjunk1e,

@arstechnica The first mobile phone took 10 hours to charge and had 30 minutes talk time for the effort (and talk was all you could do with it). The kids these days.. :blobthinkingcool:

No it doesn't make sense that regular sized (aka small) are a dying breed, they're the only phones which are ergonomic and needs less resources to be made.

sheislaurence,

@arstechnica are you saying we are going to get two-handed phones now 🥳 ?

ogi,
@ogi@hachyderm.io avatar

@arstechnica The IPhone SE (2022) is effectively the same size?

DaniEhm,

@arstechnica That is really too bad. I want a phone that fits my hand. Not a big phone that's awkward to hold.

theheretic,

@arstechnica it only makes sense if you care about Apple’s profit margins.

gpowerf,

@arstechnica The little SE is still there, it's the most conveniently sized iPhone and quite affordable but with a really horrible battery life sadly. Still, between bad battery life or having to carry a two-handed tablet I am choosing the bad battery life.

garretble,
@garretble@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica The iPhone 13 mini is also dead because the battery life was abysmal and it needs a charge.

darwinwoodka,

@arstechnica it doesn't make sense. A LOT of us want smaller phones and are tired of huge ones that don't fit our hands.
