As soon as GitHub starts rolling ads into my git workflow, I'll turn this computer off forever.

Hey how about not giving them fun new product ideas?

    And a .con for new crypto tokens and/or particularly ballsy phishers
    @fribbledom

    JigmeDatse,

    @fribbledom I'm currently looking for a place to go after having moved to GitLab. I mean, for me, it kind of doesn't matter, but I just am not interested in having my stuff on GitHub, or GitLab, any more.

    nsa,

    @fribbledom after they changed the main page I extremely disappointed. I don’t want to use it anymore

    @fribbledom VSC has ads.

    @gudenau

    Really? Never seen one.

    gudenau,
    @gudenau@fosstodon.org avatar

    @fribbledom Yeah I got ones for GitHib and GitHub Copilot.

    EqMinMax,

    @fribbledom I would say its the algorithm that ruined all of these platforms followed by ads.

    xinayder,

    @fribbledom just migrate to Codeberg.org or any instance

    realcaseyrollins,

    @fribbledom Not switch to something like ?

    the1goit,

    @fribbledom
    It appears there are ads, but for copilot and other first party things. If there's third party ads, then I'm gonna move my site's repo to an alternative.

    jaxwxboss,

    @fribbledom There are times I just have to get away from the https://sdf.org/?join out https://sdf.org/?join. provides a lot of free resources that I find enjoyable, entertaining and ad-free. You can run down a hole, peruse among many other things. It’s digital detox for modern day users 😉.

    theavidhorizon,

    @fribbledom Looks like we will be signing off really soon.

    @fribbledom Wait, why?

    git remote set-url origin <codeberg>
    git push --set-upstream origin main

    ;)

    @fribbledom they don't need to, you're already training coshitelet.

    @fribbledom To me, github is just free offsite storage.

    The local working directory is where the magic happens.

    @pfm

    Until there's a federated replacement? Nope.

    fnord,
    @fnord@chaos.social avatar

    @fribbledom @pfm I hear people are quite happy with Codeberg, which is at least run by a non-profit organization (e.V.). They run Gitea, which means that federation may come in the future.

    FIGBERT,

    @fribbledom @pfm definitely work in progress here with things like forgefed, but…

    also perhaps no need to reinvent the wheel. git is already federated.

    the question worth asking here could be “what does the ux look like for a forge that leans into git’s decentralized nature?”

    fribbledom,
    @fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

    @FIGBERT @pfm

    Git is fine. What needs to be federated are issues, PRs and discussions.

    git-bug is great, but it requires write-access to the repository to participate.

    As you say, spam will be everywhere. There is spam on GitHub as well. You'll deal with it.

    Unlike a world-writable repo, which would be super concerning on multiple levels.

  • FIGBERT,

    @fribbledom @pfm Yes. To be clear, I am not advocating that handling these things should be done informally over whatever medium is available and without any organization (as is discussed elsewhere in the thread).

    I might proffer that the primary alternative system that exists currently to GitHub's issues, PRs, and discussions are mailing lists. Before GitHub, they worked fairly well, and Sourcehut's email-based attempt at rivalry has picked up notable steam in certain communities.

    gnutelephony,

    @fribbledom @pfm I had been quite fine with gitea even without federation, but strange you should ask... there are at least two in very active development; forgejo and gitlab ;).

    Baggypants,

    @fribbledom @pfm There's been attempts like https://sourcehut.org/ where it uses email for managing issues, mailing lists for discussions and pull requests and the like. email is kind of federation I suppose. Saying "I don't want to leave this unfederated problematic platform for another less-problematic unfederated platform" seem like a weird take to me, though I'm probably missing something.

    fribbledom,
    @fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

    @Baggypants @pfm

    I guess email is federated, yes, but it's really not the UX I'm looking for when working on issues & PRs.

    While I do run my own gitea instance for some things, switching to another unfederated platform seems futile to me. The only thing that would achieve is forcing users & contributors of my software to sign up for yet another account to participate.

    Baggypants,

    @fribbledom @pfm Ah, I get you, thanks for the clarification.

    egnun,

    @fribbledom @pfm I really like the way the people handle their project. One can clone the code, do ones work and then send in any patches to their issue-tracker – via e-mail! No account needed.
    It can't really get any more federated than that. 😉

    https://issues.guix.gnu.org/

    tyil,

    @fribbledom Everything is ad space, its just a matter of time before they push it in there. Just stop using GitHub already, it's a pile of bloated shit even when there's no ads yet.
