The individuals who exploit society for their own financial gain have a vested interest in pointing people's scrutiny away from them.
They point fearful people at some mystical imaginary group of elite individuals by seeding conspiracy theories and employing profiteering grifters to spread paranoia, when all the time the real oppressors are hiding in plain sight.

The Rich Corporate Owners laugh as the Working Classes begin fighting amongst themselves instead of realizing that it was the Rich Corporate Owners who stole all the cookies."
