Em0nM4stodon,

What is your favorite positive privacy-related moment? 🔒💚

It can be something that happened to you, a positive interaction with someone, something rewarding at work or with your family, something that you learned and enjoyed.

What is something that is privacy-related and brought you joy?

Em0nM4stodon,

Here’s one of mine:

I always hide my home address with black electrical tape on my ID cards. Because most of the time when I show my ID there is no need to reveal my home address.

Once at the liquor store the cashier noticed it and questioned me about it. After I explained, she said she thought that was smart and that she was going to start doing the same.

Completely unexpectedly, I felt I had indirectly helped someone improve their safety and privacy with something so simple to do. It warmed my heart and made my day 🥰

BrilleBhrealla,

@Em0nM4stodon the address isn't mandatory here (Aotearoa NZ), but I do the same thing with my driver's license cos it's got a Union Jack on it (I'm Irish) and fuck i hate seeing my name and face under that flag.

Em0nM4stodon,

@BrilleBhrealla Hahaha, black electrical tape has so many useful usages ;)

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social avatar

@Em0nM4stodon This should be part of #TipOfDay. What a great idea.

Em0nM4stodon,

@lydiaschoch Thank you! :)

orthoheterodox,

@Em0nM4stodon Back in the day ( in CA) you used to be able to use a P.O. Box instead of your mailing address. My father in law’s driver license still has his 40 year old P.O. Box number!

Em0nM4stodon,

@orthoheterodox Oh that is brilliant! I use a P.O. Box address myself for many things (however many places do not allow it) but on a driver license that is epic! Send him all my admiration please.

orthoheterodox,

@Em0nM4stodon Will do 🙏🏽

bowreality,

@orthoheterodox @Em0nM4stodon You can in Canada (not sure if you meant Canada or California). We have our PO Box as address on the drivers license

Em0nM4stodon,

@bowreality Oh really? That is amazing, I did not know this was allowed within Canada 👍 Must vary for each province I imagine.

@orthoheterodox

bowreality,

@Em0nM4stodon @orthoheterodox Could be. I am in AB

erincandescent,

@Em0nM4stodon the whole having addresses on IDs thing weirds this Brit out

Em0nM4stodon,

@erincandescent It weirds me out too! A lot! :blobcatfearful:

@danieldurrans@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@erincandescent @Em0nM4stodon UK driving licences have the address on them.

erincandescent,

@danieldurrans @Em0nM4stodon but not on any other forms of ID

idk i just treat it as a universal driving license oddity

danieldurrans,
@danieldurrans@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@erincandescent @Em0nM4stodon How strange... and thinking about it I can't even think of a good reason why the Driving Licence would have an address on it... it's not as if the driving licence is associated with the vehicle, and any offences/fines are first sent to the keeper.

notnorm,

@Em0nM4stodon I do the same thing. One thing that has me very concerned is the growing use of “take a picture of your id to verify” for all sorts of silly apps. Irl people don’t need to see my info, and now i’m trusting it’s transfer over the wire? No thanks.

Em0nM4stodon,

@notnorm Excellent that you do the same 👍👍👍

Indeed that is extremely concerning. Moreover, the growing trend/threat of stores using ID Scanners. I put tape on my ID cards’ barcodes as well now. I wrote a thing about this here: https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/easy-practical-privacy-tips-for-everyone.html#tip-barcode

Nuggz,

@Em0nM4stodon This is a fantastic idea, thanks for this! :)

Em0nM4stodon,

@Nuggz Thank you :) And I recommend adding tape on the ID cards barcodes as well! https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/easy-practical-privacy-tips-for-everyone.html#tip-barcode

Nuggz,

@Em0nM4stodon That one unfortunately i can't do... the local dispensary where i get all my cannabis products uses a hand held scanner to scan ID's to ensure you're 21+.

They are the only ones scanning them though and tbh if i can't trust my weed dealer, all hope is lost. :)

Em0nM4stodon,

@Nuggz I don’t know about the regulations where you are but are they legally obligated to use an ID scanner for this or could they just look at your card’s information visually?

Nuggz,

@Em0nM4stodon Unsure, i think they do it to absolutely ensure that no one is using a fake I.D. to enter the dispensary and purchase something.

Tbh i have no issue with that, it's the only one i go to, they all know me and are super cool. I'm supportive of them ensuring they don't get screwed by someone being dishonest.

My name & phone number is already in their system as i'm a loyal 'rewards member' & i get discounts. I'm otherwise unwilling to share info with anyone but they are an exception.

  • Nuggz,

    @Em0nM4stodon I can't say i fully trust anyone or anything in this world. It's a calculated risk like anything.

    I also use the ATM at their dispensary on occasion but usually intentionally try to use another elsewhere before arriving.

    So there are records of my being there but cannabis is completely legal where i live for adults, everyone who knows me and has ever known me knows i'm a weed smoker, and as a customer i can appreciate their need as a business to verify age.

    Food,

    @Em0nM4stodon its this important to represent our core values directly, no matter how small or big

    padawan,

    @Em0nM4stodon I convinced four members of my family to use Signal instead of WhatsApp and ProtonMail instead of Gmail. It may not seem like much, but they didn’t care about privacy at all.

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @padawan This is a great victory worth celebrating!🎉

    If each person who has awareness about this convinces 4 more, privacy would be improving so quickly worldwide! Excellent work!👍 :signal: :protonmail: ✨

    @Em0nM4stodon I once asked on Twitter if my followers could figure out who my partner was - it is not a secret and we didn't try to hide it in any way, but I thought it would be harder than it actually turned out to be. The person who figured it out pointed out some location related information we shared that we didn't need to

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @DrVeronikaCH OSINT-pentesting your own data! Excellent idea to learn from a trusted source what data to remove and such 👍

    @Em0nM4stodon I didn't know it was called that but yes it was a good exercise 😊

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @DrVeronikaCH I don't know either 😅 But it's the terms (from the 2 fields) I find describe best this strategy. Maybe you started a thing ;)

    grob,
    @grob@mstdn.social avatar

    @Em0nM4stodon it's a bit indirect, but I got some older people from my family to use password managers and safe passwords. Hope this prevents them from getting their data leaked.

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @grob That is amazing congratulations! What a victory!🎉 This is one of the best way to help secure them 👍

    grob,
    @grob@mstdn.social avatar

    @Em0nM4stodon it was a tough gig! One of them is really happy now, though, for having to remember only one password. Which was, I think, for all of them the main reason to give it a shot. Because they at least tried different passwords even before (but ofc failed, as one does).

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @grob I can imagine. Password Managers can be complex to understand and setup at first for someone who is not technical. But even if just one person enjoys it now and realizes its benefits, it is a wonderful success!✨

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @grob In case this can be of any assistance in continuing your quest, I wrote this article-section about Password Managers and I tried to make it as accessible and encouraging as possible to read for none-technical people: https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/easy-practical-privacy-tips-for-everyone.html#tip-password

    Nuggz,

    @Em0nM4stodon It's both privacy and security related but for me it would be the day a PC that could run Qubes OS arrived at my home.

    Hardware compatibility can be an issue and before that i tried on a few other workstations i have here and was bummed i couldn't check it out.

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @Nuggz I completely relate to this feeling. I have battled my macs to run Linux distros for years with so many issues. The day I was at last able to get a none-mac laptop last year and install a Linux distro within a few minutes without any problems was such a joy! :linux::ablobsmile:

    Nuggz,

    @Em0nM4stodon Nice :)

    I used Mac's in the 90s at a few jobs i had but never owned one. I did build an AMD Hackintosh long ago but getting Mac OS to run on an AMD CPU with kext files was a f'n nightmare lol. I mostly did it just because i was curious and had extra hardware sitting around.

    I've been used to owning PC's where i could pretty much install anything without much issue but Qubes can be a tough one with the Xen Hypervisor base and hardware isolation Qubes provides.

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @Nuggz Yes indeed, Qubes is its own special thing. But the Xen hypervisor is a really cool thing. I wish I had extra hardware to install it and even try it as a daily runner. My new laptop runs a multi-boot and that is not advised for Qubes so I’ll have to wait to have extra extra hardware for it. I really love how it works though and read quite a bit about it.

    Oh and the Hackintosh community is so cool! I admire your courage of running macOS on AMD. You are brave 😅

    Nuggz,

    @Em0nM4stodon Qubes requires full disk encryption and takes over whatever drive you install it on, but if your hardware supports Qubes you can run it on a workstation with two separate drives.

    I installed Qubes first on one drive and then installed Linux on the second. Having one drive only though is definitely a deal breaker if that's the case.

    I'm a big AMD fan so i didn't have an Intel CPU for the Hackintosh but wanted to try it. It was a pain though and some things didn't work well.

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @Nuggz Indeed. It’s okay though, one day I’ll just get another smaller laptop to try it. I’d rather have it separated from my other setting (which is its own weird experimental setting already).

    Nuggz,

    @Em0nM4stodon If you ever specifically want to run it and are curious about what will and how well, the Qubes HCL is a great resource.

    https://www.qubes-os.org/hcl

    I took a chance and bought a PC that wasn't on the list but it was something i really wanted and it seemed promising. I then also created a hardware report which you can do from Qubes once installed and uploaded it to the Qubes forum.

    Em0nM4stodon,

    @Nuggz Yes it is a great resource, I am familiar with this already ;)
