I was quoted in PC Magazine about the Zoom terms of service fiasco. In particular, I said of TOS: "There can be the lawyerly temptation to phrase them as broadly as possible to give you the most flexibility as you continue to develop your service. But the problem with trying to proactively obtain as many permissions as you can is that users may start to think you will actually use them and react to that possibility."

drfancypantsesq,

@cathygellis Speaking from a lawyer perspective, this looks like a pretty clear lawyering fail (unless the directive came from above on this point). Even us lawyers need to be thinking about how our public-facing materials will look to the broader world.

halfcocked,

@drfancypantsesq @cathygellis It's a systemic problem at this point. I've had this argument multiple times with medical providers. When I tell them what their release actually allows them to do, they all look baffled and upset that I think that they would actually do what they're requesting permission to be able to do. Their lawyers draft as broadly as possible and no one from the medical side ever bothered to read it.

@halfcocked @drfancypantsesq @cathygellis This is what said about their draconian , and they promised to revise them to be less abusive. Don't think the revision ever happened.
