Raping a child is despicable. The death penalty is despicable. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
DeSantis: always pandering for votes. I mean, rapists would get the death penalty, yet the 10 year old who gets pregnant would be forced to give birth. The Republican Party used to at least pretend to stand for less government and fiscal responsibility. Now, it has no moral compass and no value at all.
@TonyStark and that's without considering the unintended (or maybe not) consequences.
Capital punishment doesn't reduce the rates of the crimes it's applied to, and will make actual perpetrators more desperate likely to kill witnesses and anyone else who gets in their way. And I say "actual" as opposed to those most likely to be arrested, charged or wrongly convicted.
Also, while I have zero sympathy for ACTUAL rapists and pedos, I think it's incredibly troubling to see "kill them all" advocated by the sorts of people who want to accuse everyone from houseless or lower-class people to LGBTQIA people as potential predators/threats to child safety
@TonyStark For me it's like I've said elsewhere: I see KYLR as a good theoretical ideal (rapists don't deserve life) BUT as theory that is inherently too dangerous to implement, especially in a world where fascists want to smear entire groups as rapists out of racism, homophobia/transphobia, classism etc
@TonyStark DeSantis is the apotheosis of American rightwing conservatism. There's no humanity, no concern for others, no tolerance. Only control, politics and the never-ending effort to own the libs and pander to the base. He's an amoral fascist asshole. There's just no other conclusion to be drawn.

Republicans want an authoritarian state with full control and oppression of regular people. When you or your loved ones are sick, tired, overworked, or burnt out by constant divisiveness and you are taught to fear everything and hate everyone you become less likely to fight back or resist in the face of injustice, corruption, or loss of rights.
@TonyStark Agree 100%. Authoritarianism is a feature of American conservatism, not a bug. DeSantis is a bug, though. Like maybe a Lyme disease carrying tick or something.
I am convinced that they believe they're designing a governing body in which fundamentalist views and leanings are rewarded and conservative viewpoints surge forward to gain more control.
What they've done is pissed off the less authoritarian folks into fighting back against them. Whipped up a dangerous frenzy in their own houses - and they walked too close to the edge to be able to walk back from the war they've decided we need to have.
The Repubs aren't the brightest of their generations. Sure, some of them are smarter but the grand majority of them are multi-generational wealth. They are accustomed to luxury and easy lives. Over abundance and wasted consumption.
And they've decided the servant class needs to be "further brutalized". If they would read history, they would see how that ends. They literally can't win. It's not something that can happen.
I could and likely should write a book as to why I think this won't happen - but it won't. Literally can't - there are too many factors that short-sighted tiny minds like DeSantis aren't calculating.
Like the “Church”, conservatives have pushed, poked and intruded to such a degree that the “war” against them has become a self fulfilled prophecy. They instigated this war. Deliberately. I agree wholeheartedly that todays republicans are mostly frat boys that never grew up and lack even the basic skills or experience to govern. They certainly haven’t a clue on justly governing a diverse citizenry.
@TonyStark I'm a big fan of 1984 (the book, but also the Van Halen record of course 🤡 ) and have always been chilled when O'Brien says, "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face." It seems hyperbolic but it's at least in the same zip code as forced births, book bans, racial and gender oppression, unlimited guns, voter suppression -- all the hits from the Republican canon.
@TonyStark Reality check: this is eugenics. This is ensuring that abused children will not survive. Why should abusers leave their victims alive if they’re going to get the same penalty either way? This is the Republicans carrying out what their member said out loud: they’d rather abused children die, because therapy costs their system.
@TonyStark Do a search for child abuse by profession. Youth pastors, christian clergy, boy scout leaders, and sports coaches almost entirely. Basically republican voters.
@TonyStark I think remaining in jail with no possibility of parole and fulfilling the full sentence would be a bigger punishment than say the death penalty. The death penalty should be reserved only for acts of treason.

Why is it always red state governors who proclaim to be pro life who push to expand the death penalty? I guess life only counts in utero, and barely at that.
