Don't get me wrong, I love #Linux and ran it for about 3 years before being forced to go back to #Windows. Coming back to it recently has been a great joy.

But the pain of installing #Matlab and losing my entire #Factorio run recently really broke me.

Linux is fun, but the installation of software is often a pain, and I can see the barrier it would have for even my technical friends. The other thing is the weird instability I sometimes experience. Something like my software working great and then just crashing for days without changing anything.

Overall, it is fun for a developer, but I sometimes miss the fire and forget the ease of use I had with Windows and 90% of my #Steam library.

@Stark9837 I find installing Matlab on Linux to be ridiculously simple. New versions never overwrite old. Sometimes I just rsync /usr/local/MATLAB from one machine to another.

askonomm,

@Stark9837 It's not even fun as a developer, at least for me, when doing a ton of things that are basic in other operating systems requires deep learning of terminal hacks. Not to mention most of the DE's feel designed by non-designers, inconsistent to the point that makes Windows look like a well designed system in comparison.

I would love the ability to hack on things, but I'd also love a working out-of-the-box experience. I like MacOS the most, because Unix niceties, but Win11 is also ok.

@Stark9837 For Factorio, doesn't Steam Cloud download your save file? If not, I'm sure you can Google where Proton puts the save files and copy your file from Windows, if you still have it

@Stark9837
Linux can definitely be a challenge. Personally I've found it more stable (fewer crashes) than Windows, but I have certainly run into significant non-crash problems.

Sorry you lost your factorio run. I play factorio some on linux, when my hands are up for it. Haven't had problems, but it doesn't recognize my desktop keyboard remappings

The3DRoom,

@Stark9837 Have to agree. I do like Linux but application support is still poor and, as you say, you can be jumping through hoops to do the (what on windows would be) the simplest of things. IMHO, it's never going to be a daily driver for the masses.
