Game design document (#gamedev thread)

I started to write a GDD, the first points are very general: a brief description, genres and general features, basic mechanics, setting as an example of a movies, games for analysis, distinguishing features of gameplay - it can all fit on one page

After the chapter "history game universe" in GDD, I began to write the chapter about locations. In order to imagine the picture as a whole. There are currently 30 unique locations, some of which can be repeated from 3 to 25 times.

After describing the locations, you can draw a map draft. Having a history of the game universe, a description of the locations and a draft of the map - makes it easier to write the Plot

@maxim i assume there's possibly a fair bit of iteration in the process ... as you work out the story, coming to realise that there's missing locations you hadn't originally envisaged, so looping back to that part of the document/planning?

@patrick_h_lauke yes, iteration exists between the plot and the list of locations

if I describe other chapters and a new location comes to my mind, then I can return to the plot again

I will write about other chapters when I finish the plot

While working on the story section about the game's universe, I think about that people are now doing this via chatGPT, which can create multiple variants. I don't want to do that, and I've been writing this chapter all day. I don't even know how long it will take. But I will remember how much time I spent on it, and then after the release - I will tell you. Somewhere in 2-3 years, if I'm still alive 😁 OMG, I'm afraid to imagine it again, a process that can take 2-3 years

@maxim Don't give in. People who use ChatGPT as part of what they perceive to be a creative process have failed a lot of important tests.

Do we need to think about the name of the game right away? I think not, because describing the history of the game universe, you will reread it over time and the name will appear. But you need to come up with a code name for the project

@maxim I feel that, to a certain extent, the title can inform the design. In my long list of game ideas that I might use one day, sometimes I just write down a title - when I read it back, a whole game is implied. But you're right - a code name can fulfil that purpose, too.

The most interesting section is the history and information of the game universe. It must be described in great detail, because everything else will depend on it, the rules, the impact on the mechanics, the design of technologies, the appearance of the environment
