@underlap You might also be interested in ActivityPods, something I’ve been hearing about but just recently discovered is farther along than I expected!
@underlap content migration has historically been a difficult problem to solve simply because all these companies and softwares operate in pseudo-competition with one another.
For example #nodebb can migrate posts from #phpBB#vBulletin etc., but it's all custom migrators.
Something as simple as a common format for data portability would go a long way towards ease of content migration.
I am not certain many users elect to use or not use platforms based on portability though.
@devnull@underlap "a common format for data portability". ActivityStreams was originally created for that purpose, among others (before ActivityPub). Mastodon uses AS2 for post exports, for example. The primary technical issue is that AP/AS2 objects are identified by URIs that use DNS domain names. Those identifiers are spread throughout the AP Fediverse, so it's a challenge to migrate them to a different DNS domain. However, the social issues may be more challenging than the technical ones.
@hcj The Firefish docs talk about account migration but don't describe importing posts from Mastodon. Do you happen to know where this is documented, claimed, blogged about, etc?
@underlap@hcj#Sharkey, a direct fork of Misskey 13, has added imports for numerous account types. I’ve personally tried the Twitter, Mastodon, Firefish, and Instagram imports and they worked - including the attached media if available. Imported notes aren’t federated and lose replies, favorites and boost counts.
