bloodwrites,

People who complain about the different rules on different servers never navigated the Internet when forums were the thing.

It was the norm to read the damn rules and lurk for a while to get your head around the culture of the place.

Yes, I'm old. Perhaps that's why fedi is majority . We've done this kind of thing before and it's not that big of a deal.

bloodwrites,

Along with this, however, is existing fedi denizens calling people out on other instances for 'breaking rules' that don't apply to them.

Like, jesus. Way to drive people away, douchebag. Report them and move on, let your admin deal with it.

@bloodwrites I think folks should be quicker to block other accounts or entire servers from their personal accounts. I see too many reports for accounts that aren’t breaking rules on our server or the server they’re on, but their posts annoy someone, so they report them.

Mulderc,
@Mulderc@xoxo.zone avatar

@bloodwrites I feel like a lot of complaints about the #fediverse look to me like just complaints about how the internet works.

bloodwrites,

@Mulderc yeah that's what happens when everyone crowds onto like 4 big sites, they think that's the internet

rushraptor,

@bloodwrites lurk moar used to be the norm (and as a teen in Gen X spaces when you all were 20-30 I should have done more of that 😂)

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@bloodwrites forums, Usenet, and IRC servers for very specific interest groups. Let alone the time before that when I was on CompuServe.
Custom rules everywhere.
It's not hard. Be a good neighbour, right?

hllizi,
@hllizi@hespere.de avatar

@bloodwrites the problem is, at heart, total ignorance of the web. People know two or three clubs and think they know the city.

@bloodwrites
Forums were around for us millennials too, so I don't understand it!

acn128,

@bloodwrites @hippiegunnut
In , almost every echo (= newsgroup) had its own rules and a moderator which could be quite strong.

ammoniumperchlorate,

@bloodwrites
I'm a GenZer and I only remember this sort of forum culture from a very brief time in my childhood. Really makes me feel sad :(

cwagdev,

@bloodwrites the difference is the interface. Each web forum was distinctly different and for me that signaled that I was in a different place … a mastodon client being the interface to various instances doesn’t have that. They also intertwine so conversations cross rule/topic boundaries.

I’m not really sure “how” to use any of it but I’m here and having a good time.

wildweasel,

@bloodwrites With the extra benefit that we no longer have to worry about making sure to post in the correct subforum. 😁

GarLipow,

@bloodwrites Difference is that the server is not just a place to talk to people on that server, but all over the Fediverse. It is like choosing an email server without a written guide about how its rules differ from other email servers; you have to lurk to discover you've chosen the wrong server. On Mastodon, I ran into a server that considered criticizing racism racist, which you could not tell by lurking.

And I'm older than you. Was not only on bboards, but Usenet! On a VAX account,

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@bloodwrites Having been online since those forum days in early 90s I understand your point but the real problem to us newcomers is that the Fediverse is sold as come over to Mastodon as if it is just one big network somehow powered by separate servers but still one network-We are not sold or informed on it being multiple separate distinct communities that it seems often fight with each other

b_cavello,
@b_cavello@mastodon.publicinterest.town avatar

@bloodwrites recognizing that that may not be familiar to a buncha folks and trying to make onboarding clearer and more accessible seems sensible, then

VacantInside,

@bloodwrites @grayface_ghost exactly this. I still lurk every time I join anything 🤣

@bloodwrites @grayface_ghost I feel like I use this gif a bunch, but it's always so damn appropriate.

@bloodwrites I wouldn't say younger groups haven't been exposed to differing community rules on similar or same platforms, with stuff like Discord guilds or whatnot (granted while I am part of Gen Z, I'm a lot more used to smaller community managed sites than others in my age group)

I think it's fine to critique other servers rules and how they enforce them because they still do affect you. Like a server that abuses defederation is bound to cause problems for users both in and out of the server

bloodwrites,

@Flux

Yeah the discord thing makes it all the more difficult to understand tbh

I don't have a problem with critiquing other instance rules. There's plenty of servers out there with shit rules or shit enforcement.

wx1g,

@bloodwrites Oh, yah, forums, usenet, listserves, and irc. You just had to lurk, a while, and learn the ropes. Forums and lists posted rules, and there was "netiquet" and we, mostly, got along. I hear people, out in Net Land, saying, "Yah, OK, Boomer"; LOL!

bloodwrites,

@wx1g
mostly 😂

Yowie9644,

@bloodwrites Exactly!

My first "social media" was Usenet.

I'm still friends with the folks I got to know there, even if we've never met in Real Life.

morenonatural,
@morenonatural@todon.nl avatar

@bloodwrites people complain about this?

bloodwrites,

@morenonatural
"mastodon is SO CONFUSING what's with all the different rules it's too COMPLICATED"

Fushigifox,

@bloodwrites so true, I lurked on here for months before getting a feel for it 😅 I never made the connection until you said it here

david_megginson,

@bloodwrites Since we're federated, every instance affects every other one (unlike with online forums).

The #fediverse is a bit like baseball — it's ok to have some extra house rules in each ballpark, but they can't conflict with the shared league rules.

MarvinTheMartian,

@bloodwrites @Hey_Beth bulletin board systems. Dial up modems. Old

matty,
@matty@blahaj.zone avatar

@bloodwrites The funny thing is even some Discord server has different rules which I still don't get why people are this petty over

bloodwrites,

@matty
This is very very true, huh.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@bloodwrites what used to be considered a low barrier of entry seems to be almost insurmountable by today's "standards".

ironcatzion,

@bloodwrites The difference is, forums lacked direct connection to one another (just like Discord servers @lunareclipse mentioned), so there was no boosting or federated timeline to consider.
