helenczerski,

Well, that's a new one. I'm on a train to Carlisle which has been stuck at Preston for a while (after a load of people got on here), and was already overcrowded because the train before it was cancelled. They’ve just announced that the train is overcrowded and they will not let the train move until some people leave the train. So now everyone is looking at everyone else, wondering who is going to move.

WHY are we underfunding railways to the point where this is even an option?

@helenczerski @samsterby I was on a train in 2016 (London–Penzance at Easter) where the police had to be called to do crowd control. It was incredibly overcrowded to the point that we were delayed at every station because of the amount of time it took people to get on and off. I dread to think what would have happened in an emergency. I can only presume things have gotten worse since then.

@helenczerski what happened in the end? Did you all take over the train and drive on, Mad Max style?

Or time for a mammoth balloon debate?

@craiggrannell @helenczerski yes, I want to know what happened eventually as well 🤔

wootube,

@helenczerski Prediction: This problem will only be sorted out when the Guard intervenes. The train companies say Guards aren't needed, 'because efficiency'. I saw someone have an epileptic seizure. They might have died without the Guard moving people so the ambulance crew could get on board.

@helenczerski What happened in the end?

PortTalbot,

@helenczerski Remember that putting the railway in private companies would make the service better?

Mystary,

@helenczerski Did they try the trick of locking the toilets until the required number of (desperate) people alighted?

@biffvernon@mastodon.online avatar

@helenczerski One would think that if that many people had got on the train then that many people could be carried by the train.

@helenczerski is the answer to your question, "Tories"?

@helenczerski This was all written about (differently but depressingly similar) this past week in the paper (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/sep/26/no-one-knew-anything-rail-passengers-11-hour-london-to-edinburgh-odyssey) because of failures (lack of maintenance?) that no-one seemed to admit or sort out well at the time. Good luck!

@helenczerski I'm curious - what happened?

driftingThoughts,

@helenczerski Interested to know the technical reason behind this.

In India there is no such thing like an uncrowded train. But never have I even seen railway drivers complaining about it. So yeah, curious on this one.

Just an extreme example of what I am talking about:

Start by throwing the conductors off.

@helenczerski What's required is adequately funded railways, or an almighty room-clearing fart.

weatherprince,

@helenczerski I just got back from riding trains across Spain... it was incredible how efficient, easy and reliable they were. So much better than air travel. Why can't we have nice public transit things in the US? (Rhetorical)

AdamStuartSmith,
@AdamStuartSmith@sauropods.win avatar

@helenczerski We need double-decker trains like in Germany!

qsr711,

@helenczerski it's so strange that, by design, those train cars can't withstand that amount of people

VoxofGod,

@helenczerski to borrow the theme for metaphor, we are on a slow moving train wreck

It's slow motion is one of the reasons that policy can get ignored. No one's in charge and people are going to loot whenever and however they can

And cutting public transportation is an old chestnut for budget balancers
