I don't get all the hype about #signal and usernames.

  • they still grab phone numbers
  • they still are centralized silo, adamant on controlling your communication
  • they still are hysterical about possibility of third-party clients.

Still zero reasons to switch from #xmpp.

@brie Or Matrix. But I think Signal is popular because it is a full organization running the service with people to defend against government interference too.

Sure, but the question was never "switching from XMPP" : #Signal is an entry-level application for people interested by privacy but without technical knowledge.
I have yet to succeed in convincing anyone to use #XMPP while I already convinced people in my circle of relations to use Signal.
And of the people I convinced to use #protonmail only maybe one in ten remembers their password or care to check their inbox from time to time.

Friction is a great way to discourage people...

@lienrag @brie Beeper, now owned by Automattic, operates a Matrix node. All of its users are also on Matrix and I am assuming able to participate in any Matrix room from that client.
