Israel Using Phosphorus!

Human Rights Watch said that it “verified videos taken in Lebanon and Gaza on October 10 and 11, 2023, respectively, showing multiple airbursts of artillery-fired white phosphorus over the Gaza City port and two rural locations along the Israel-Lebanon border.

An update to my previous story of two "honesty" researchers whose studies used fraudulent data: one of them has a new TV show on NBC & the other one is suing the data analysts who caught her.

Goodreads kinda sucks now. I know this is old news, but every once in a while I use it and find some new thing. I was browsing through my feed on iOS and realized that none of the profiles showed last names, usernames, birthdays, interests, or any other identifying details, so if someone had a reasonably common name there's no easy way for me to tell who they are. So because I was curious, I tried to repeat this on the website. In order to log in, I had to press the signup button, then press the "Already a member? sign in here" button, then press the "sign in with email" button. I later learned that there's a "Sign In" button on the homepage, but it wasn't there by the time I looked up the book. Other than being as cluttered as always, the website is fine, and it actually shows useful information about my friend list. I verified that a single profile showed lots of information on web and nothing but book-related info on iOS. Even if the website is usable, I'm pretty done with the whole thing at this point. I haven't updated mine for years and eventually just wiped it, because it was completely out of sync with anything I've actually read. I haven't really seen anything meaningful happen with it for a decade, other than the discontinued API and one major accessibility issue being fixed on iOS after 3 years of reporting it. It feels like we get all the drawbacks of an Amazon-owned service without any of the benefits. Try asking Alexa what the goodreads rating of a book is, for instance. But you can be sure they're collecting all that sweet user data and doing something with it.

Everyone, I have an idea:

We should create a global holiday:

Backup Day. Everyone gets a day off to stay at home and make sure that all important files are backed up. At the end of the day you have a family dinner and share a scary data loss story to scare the kids

Edit: as some have pointed out, there already is a Backup Day! It is March 31st so I expect no less then a large celebration on @fosstodon next year. Happy Backup day everyone! :omya_aws:

I saw a post a few days ago about how annoying emoji use can be for people using screen readers, and I've been low key thinking about it since

I'd like to make sure the emoji on our instance are named in a way that's accessible and posts from our server provide a good experience

Anyone with experience in accessibility or using screen readers, I'd appreciate your input on best practices (if you have the time) :blobcathearthug:

zkrisher,

@fsnk I’m a screen reader user short descriptions are better as emojis are sprinkled throughout text and long descriptions interrupt the flow. They are also often groupt and take a long time to get through. Emojis are meant to convey a meaning and thats what we need to know. The exact deatails are less important.

zkrisher,

@BonKH @fsnk

Note that when I recommended brevity in alt-text I was referring specifically to emojis. They are prolific and appear again and again, so a long description will get tiresome.

When a single image is used to illustrate a post it is important to describe it in more detail. You do not have to describe every detail on the book cover, just the ones that are important to convey the meaning or feeling the cover is intended to convey.

zkrisher,

@BonKH @fsnk

Sadly I do not know of a ready database of cover descriptions.

Perhaps this IPTC protocol will help carry descriptions across different platforms and create a database of already described images.

@accessibleandroid

I'm looking for a TalkBack accessible international online radio app for android.

I have an African student, she has been using a website but they changed their design and the player is no longer accessible.

I need a free app because she doesn't have a credit card. Hopefully without full screen popup adds.

zkrisher,

@accessibleandroid

Thank you very much, vRadio has the stations she loves.

At first I got full screen adds. But I found that I can change it to banners in settings.

This is great because she is not adept at using the phone and the full screen adds confuse her.

Sarah Gailey's The Echo Wife, is also on sale on Audible.

It's a powerful book about cloning, abusive relationships, free will, chauvinism, humanity and inhumanity. With an unsympathetic viewpoint character as part if it's charm.
