When did you know a career was either the perfect or the worst match for your personality?

I’m trying to give someone advice on choosing a career that will suit them better than the one they’re in and hate. I wanted to get together a list of good questions for them to ask themselves so they can use the answers to compare options like “do you prefer to work sitting or moving around,” “do you want to not work...

I went to university to study statistics, and I absolutely love statistics… but I was forced to learn SAS and, fucking hell, I hacked that program to shit… my presentations would have loads of pretty printing, multiple data ingest methods, proper error reporting…

So I switched into CS and liked it a lot… then I took a course on data modeling, which led to a course of Relational Algebra (essentially the abstract logical form of what you’re typing in SQL to your RDBMS) then I went on to become a developer and, while I am multiskilled and able to build UIs and backends and even embedded systems… I absolutely adore data architecture and DB performance tuning.

I really can’t understate how incredibly easy it is for me to look at a query over a system I understand and quickly identify likely bottlenecks and logical errors.

If you re-read my comment, you might notice there isn’t a single “Eureka” moment but instead are a series of them - I think that’s how most of come to be in careers we truly enjoy.

xmunk,

Yea, Tom Porter. I worked at the community for a few springs/summers and participated in setting up for the Strawberry festival. My father was in turmoil after his mother died and it was revealed she was a foundling and his grandparents weren’t actually his grandparents. There is some evidence she may have been mowhawk though my DNA test didn’t show any trace… either way I got a crash course on American Indian culture and while I don’t claim to be a tribal member I support the community when I can, especially in terms of cultural outreach and preservation.

xmunk,

MicroSD cards also don’t look nearly as badass if woven into a skirt.

xmunk,

My dad converted old assembly programs into Cobol for spending money in uni - his textbooks were full of cast offs.

xmunk,

“To contrast, the human brain apparently can’t remember a simple piece of information like not getting attached to their companion cube. I think we know who would be better at a party, the punchcard.”

It is insanely interesting to me whenever I come across details in old file formats that were included specifically to work around hardware limitations. The wide knowledge required to be aware of all these wild factors is amazing.

As you can tell, I’m fun at parties.

xmunk,

Honestly, yea… badass.

xmunk,

One of my proudest university moments was getting a 50% on an exam. I built this absolutely fucking glorious solitare implementation in Java as a first year student that dove deep into how image buffers work and stayed up all night doing it. I got 100% on the project and 0% on the presentation that I slept through (my prof did offer me some extra credit which I took advantage of).

Never have I ever felt more validated in preferring to be a code monkey with zero interactions with clients than in that moment - I produced unimpeachably perfect results and completely fucked the communication side (thankfully, I’ve worked through a lot of my social anxiety but I’m still strongly in the introvert camp).

xmunk,

We have far better discussions on Lemmy, but there are some really niche communities I follow on Reddit still because there aren’t enough interested folks here on Lemmy.

xmunk,

Can I ask why you dislike /s?

xmunk,

It’s really a nice feeling when strangers on the internet can read your comment and get what you’d written in the right context - even if that context is an obscure in-joke. But there are a lot of people on the internet and a lot of real assholes that might non-sarcastically say whatever crazy thing you’re joking at…

Especially when it comes to neuro-divergent folks, I think the /s is quite helpful. People want to be in on your joke. It’s fun to connect with humor on the internet… and omitting a /s makes it extremely unlikely that some folks, especially those on the autism spectrum, will be able to share that moment with you… instead, it’s more likely to be read as an attack or at least yet another disappointing failure of humanity and compassion playing out over the web.

So if people don’t seem to get your joke when you omit the /s, please do realize that you’ve made your speech less accessible and some people are getting offended by your speech and it isn’t their fault - it’s yours. That said, if you enjoy having more arcane jokes and occasionally being downvoted into oblivion, then nobody is going to force you to /s.

xmunk,

C++ is pretty sweet.

It definitely has its issues - don’t get me wrong, but it’s pretty sweet.

xmunk,

Gabbard is clearly just in it for the money. It’d be nice if they could go away now.

xmunk,

Awesome, so his suspension will be up right in time to challenge the 2024 election.

xmunk,

A huge fucking win. If you look at the Akwesasne reservation you’ll see much better health outcomes than other US tribes - tribes simply don’t have the funds to access the main US Healthcare system independent of individual enrollment without relying on casinos (and that’s a complex topic I’d just like to sidestep). However, due to rolling a nat 20 on historical flukes the Akwesasne reservation actually straddles the US Canadian borders and all tribal members are assumed residents of both nations (outside of weird circumstances).

As a result they’ve had access to Canadian health services during emergencies and as such get preventative care much more often. I look forward to better health outcomes for all native peoples!

xmunk,

Mark Meadows was the fucking chief of staff… it feels disingenuous to simply refer to him as an aide.

xmunk,

She doesn’t know shit, she doesn’t care about governing… she just wants fame and attention. I have conservative relatives in AZ and while I’m sure they’d vote for her they continuously bitch about her.

xmunk,

South Park ISP Support Guy (while rubbing his nipples): I’m sorry. We’re just so sorry.

xmunk,

He’s a prominent black radio host who likely has a decently good impression of the political leanings of his listeners and is observing a contrast between the polling and his experience on the ground.

Is his listener base representative of the black community - good question.

But I think his opinion is probably relatively informative.

'We are at risk of running out': Calgarians asked to use 25% less water than yesterday (www.cbc.ca)

After a major feeder water main break plunged Calgary’s water supply into a critical state, city officials are now asking Calgarians to use 25 per cent less than they did yesterday, sounding the alarm that the city is at risk of running out....

xmunk,

Gosh, the conservatives are doing such a good job managing provincial services!

Why Assassin's Creed has lost its identity?

Remember those iconic games before 2014? The OG, while dated was really unique for its time, the Ezio Auditore Trilogy that became the standard for the franchise, 3, that was very ambitious (probably too much) with it’s setting and story telling. Even 4, although it was the first time AC escaped from the base of what an...

xmunk,

Valhalla will feel a lot like Odyssey, though I would mention that they were much more careful about reusing layouts. Odyssey suffered from so many of the forts and environments being literal carbon copies of one another which is fine (I guess) for a glory fighter but really destroys the puzzle aspect.

xmunk,

Yea, that was my idea as well, it’ll create some real havoc for ye olde sprawling base design by forcing better attention to balancing but, if a recipe chain only has one bio ingredient it should be easy to design around.

I’m terrified of what the modders will do with this… especially something like Space Ex where they’d likely put two separate timed biologicals on different worlds and require you to really focus on rapid transit to get both to one processing site before you hit a failure.

It also might present a real issue for railworld style builds since you’ll want train conditions set so you don’t idle in a station too long, and frequency of collection high enough not to allow too much rot within buffer chests.

Extremely interesting problems. In the base game it sounds like it will be a bit trivialized by being able to slap down the appropriate terrain wherever you need it (eventually) but modders could make really interesting requirements for it.

I, for one, hail our new belt of fully spoiled brown algae in seablock overlords.

xmunk,

I really appreciate the environmentally integrated sort of bio-harvesting. I think everyone would have been perfectly happy with an arboretum style approach like we’ve seen in various mods but this approach feels a lot nicer.
