“Big layoff at Duolingo : r/duolingo”

Pretty sure that the AI Bubble is kicking of a round of massive platform decay in every sector of tech and big chunks of the media industry

This is going to overwhelmingly destroy more value than it creates. https://sh.reddit.com/r/duolingo/comments/18sx06i/big_layoff_at_duolingo/

willsh,

@baldur in a few decades time, it’ll be interesting to track back the evolution of different versions of a language to incidents like this - people who speak ‘Dualingo Spanish’…

I’ve never understood anyone who looked at Musk and thought ‘yep, would be happy to ride around in a vehicle that guy was involved in’.

A good morning reminder of Haitz’s Law - every 10 years, the power of LED lighting will increase by a factor of 20, while the cost of these per unit of illumination will fall by a factor of 10.

For some materials, it perhaps becomes so cheap to make everything a screen, that it becomes too expensive for it not to have screen capability woven in.

A bit closer, and you can see the ‘dots’, the pixels that make up the screen
Closer still, and you see each dot is actually three LEDs - red, green and blue - which will tune to produce any colour you want

A wee reflection post on #WeWork - which I’ve been taking occasional photos in for years, just to document the absurdity… https://smithery.com/2023/11/07/wework-never-worked/

Late night blogging, about blogrolls. Responsive design destroyed web marginalia, and we’re all the poorer for it.

Instead of MMA (mixed martial arts), I’d like to see…

MAA.

Mixed Actual Arts.

Live, head-to-head contests using any combination of painting, prose, poetry, acting, singing, or the playing of instruments.

Delighted that Where The Light Gets In, a regenerative design field kit, is shipping today. It may be the best thing I’ve ever made.

It took 13 years and an inspired director to get from Oliver Stone's Wall Street to Mary Harron's American Psycho.

It's been 13 yeats since David Fincher's The Social Network, a fine movie by itself. But who would be the next Mary Harron to truly capture this era of runaway sociopaths - and would the protagonist be a developmentally warped founder, or a mad-from-money equity vulture?

willsh,

@osma there were definitely hints of it in Garland’s Ex Machina and DEVS.

willsh,

@osma Can really recommend it. Garland’s best work, perhaps.

“Techno-Optimists believe that societies, like sharks, grow or die.”

This is what happens when nobody in your company is allowed to edit your work and question your metaphors.

“We believe a second energy silver bullet is coming – nuclear fusion. We should build that as well.”

I hadn’t realised that, like Brexit, what was stopping nuclear fusion was we’re just believing hard enough.

Question for the #Apple folks and #iPad users in the fediverse: I’m planning to get an iPad for mainly reading and research stuff and I’m not sure if iPad mini would be enough for the job or should I go for an iPad Air.

Does anyone have recommendations or experience with this kind of use? What do you think I should consider before making the decision?

willsh,

@ahmetasabanci I have an iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard. I like the size for reading, but it also makes a great focussed writing device. The focus is an interesting thing - without a dock (and with few notifications on) I find it can keep me on task longer.

  • willsh,

@ianbetteridge of all tech companies, it’s this sort of thing that makes me have a greater level of trust in Apple. But running a family exclusively on Apple devices is a privileged position. Once again, it’s worrying that digital privacy is now a premium service rather than a basic right.

@willsh hey John, looks like something went wrong on your website.

This is what I see when I visit: “Fatal error: Cannot declare class WP_REST_Navigation_Fallback_Controller, because the name is already in use in /home/customer/www/smithery.com/public_html/wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/lib/experimental/class-wp-rest-navigation-fallback-controller.php on line 0”

    willsh,

@ahmetasabanci ah, thanks - thought I’d sorted that before I went away - will look now.

    willsh,

@ahmetasabanci And… we’re back. Weird, will need to work out what caused this at some point!
