“[Bruce Fanjoy] wants to bring Carleton’s rural and suburban populations closer together, help businesses transition to a cleaner, sustainable environment and assist farmers in cutting their energy costs by using some of the technology he used when building Millview.”

@thetyee Bruce Fanjoy on Poilievre:

“I rarely hear people expressing admiration for Pierre himself. He’s rarely here and hasn’t done anything for the riding. A very senior person with the Conservative party told me recently that Pierre’s been living in Carleton’s basement all these years, contributing nothing. It is a riding of convenience for him.”

@thetyee Bruce Fanjoy on Poilievre:

"He is not a thoughtful man. His thinking on complex issues is shallow. He doesn’t surround himself with challengers, just yes men. He is autocratic and lacking in substance. Many of the things Canadians admire will be in his crosshairs if he wins. A retreat on gun control, human rights, women’s reproductive rights.”

The biggest thing I like about Mastodon is that I have a self-curated timeline that includes only people I follow, and excludes things that I've explicitly filtered out. So no mention of most US politics, no tedious topics that don't interest me, plenty of progressive, interesting people. Am I missing perspectives? Of course I am. But do I really need to see rants from racists, homophobes, anti-vaxxers and the like?

“The document says 10 provincial ministries would be involved in promoting the plan through ‘a proactive communications approach’ by emphasizing measures in the bill that could save Ontarians small amounts of money. One such measure would continue a freeze on renewal fees for driver’s licences originally announced in 2018, which saves drivers $7 [sic] every five years.”

Folks who prefer to drive are often highly resistant to lower speed limits, skeptical about why low speeds are so important. The reason is simple: speed kills pedestrians and cyclists. This has been known for decades. From Global Road Safety Partnership:

“The human tolerance to injury by a car will be exceeded if the vehicle is travelling at more than 30 km/h. Pedestrians, as illustrated above, incur a risk of about 80% of being killed at a collision speed of 50 km/h.”

@xtaran a follow-up to a previous #BikeNite question about crossing borders by bike:

Q4. What are your experiences cycling in a country other than your home country? What was it like? What was different?

(As a European I have no idea how different each state in the US or CDN is, so if you are from North America and never cycled abroad, tell us about your experience in another state.)

(Sorry this question is out of order!)

@ascentale @xtaran When I first visited Boulder CO, USA, I was amazed by the cycling infrastructure. I used rented bikes to get to meetings and other places, but felt uncomfortable without my helmet and without a mirror. But after a few days I got comfortable as I gradually realized that the infrastructure was protecting me. It was quite the revelation for me. When I compare to what we have in Waterloo Region, it’s with Boulder rather than European cities.

@Snowshadow @uxmark This morning from author @markbourrie :

"I don't always feel like this, but today I do. I'm old. I'm solvent. I can protect my kids from a lot. I have good friends and a family. If angry Canadians, sociopath politicians & crooked journalists want drive this country into a ditch, then fuck it, I'll read and putter."
"If people think they’ll be better off with the [Cons] then have at it. The ones complaining the most will get hurt the most"

@eyrea @gemelliz @Snowshadow @markbourrie @gakechnie 18% of eligible voters voted for the Ontario PCs in the last election. The majority of eligible voters didn’t bother to vote. That’s the root cause of the problem. And it’s an opportunity for the next election: get people to care enough to vote.

10 miles into the 600-mile drive to visit my sister for Christmas, my car's transmission* went belly up. Fortunately we had a plan B and were still able to celebrate the holidays with family, but the spectre of having to pay for a new transmission loomed. Having to buy a whole new car would have been terrifying indeed.

Cars are prohibitively expensive. It's stupid how much we've forced ourselves to depend on them.

12.5 years ago, my son ordered a flag that will have been flown on Parliament Hill (either East Block or West Block — not the Peace Tower, as that would have taken much longer to arrive). The flag arrived this week, much earlier than expected. This flag flew from Oct 6 to 13 of this year. Clearly our dog Oscar is interested non the new arrival.
