Square cube law? Square shumb law!

Arthropods can get humongous. The main reason they don't is they are far too tempting targets for warm-blooded vertebrates.

But about that? Why couldn't an arthropod also be warm-blooded? Maybe some were.

And that thing you heard about "giant insects needed higher O2 levels" also questionable. Arthroplura was still around after the levels crashed... something else ended the golden age.

@futurebird It depends on what you mean by warm blooded. There are a whole bunch of moths that can generate their own body heat for flight (endothermy), although they don't maintain a constant body temperature (poikilothermy).

I had to do my taxes so I had some milk tea and kaya toast to make the process less painful.

Where to get all-day #currypuff (karipap) in #PetalingJaya ? Seems not as widely available these days, other than some early morning nasi lemak vendors. And I don't mean the fancy $5+ ones from restaurants either. #malaysia

@jkn Shell and Family Mart have decent big currypuffs that are usually avaliable for most of the day. Ikea has good currypuffs in the cafe section.

New substack post on the intrinsic/ inherent shape of a fungus.

Yep, I made that up, but I think it's pretty interesting. Read for yourself....

@mrillig Interesting idea, but why not use a MRI or radioactive tracers to get the shape instead of trying to find a transparent medium?

@art_history_animalia That's not a bee. The front legs, thin hind legs, short wings and face look like a cicada nymph. (It's a good carving of a cicada though, all the details are accurate)

I wonder who misidentified it?

Saw a turtle crossing a road with fast-moving cars today.

Couldn’t stop the car to help it unfortunately, hope that it safely crossed the road without being crushed by cars.

@rakyat Dont forget the terrapins

ubi,

@rakyat Sometimes Malayan Box turtles also wander onto roads. Usually near swampy areas.

ubi,

@rakyat hmm... then red eared slider is likely.

@irfan Munchkin cats, dwarf cats, there are a few breeds of cats that are cute but do all sorts horrible things to the insides of the cats. They exist but most reponsible breeders dont do it for ethical reasons.

This microscope lens for my camera is one of the coolest things I've ever made.

Anytime I find a tiny bug in my place I get my mind blown.

Case in point: Can someone help me identify what it is that I found? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

Found in Raleigh, NC.

A top-down view of the same insect showing the spikes. There are two rows of four yellow spikes, while all the rest is dark gray or black.

A gif showing various individual photos of the same insect taken from the front, with different parts of the insect in focus.

@mzedp Looks like a ladybug larva.
