Cultural history class this week includes the bicycle boom of the 1890s.

Newspapers from this period are filled with the complaints of men who say bicycles ruined their marriages, since wives only care to ride and no longer tend to their "duties."

The Rev. Thomas Gregory saw the bike as a threat to his parishioners' intellect and health.

"It annihilates the reading habit. The libraries are deserted. It is a menace to domestic virtues. It breaks up and destroys the home."

I’ve seen churches oppose aiding refugees— even protest or call the school board if others do so. Is this evangelism?

@pteranodo Yes there were quite massive displacements of ppl after WW1. In Western coutntries we tend not to have them in focus, I think. I was actually wondering if it was earlier. Vienna had a huge increase in population around the end of the 19th century, with an attendant hpusing crisis, & wouldn't surprise me if Budapest was similar.

He had the smoothest, fairest ride through the criminal justice system that the State of NY has to offer. He didn't get perp-walked in handcuffs trying to hide his face under a jacket. He didn't spend 3 days in a Central Booking holding cell with his paperwork lost. He had a team of experienced, high-priced lawyers from the start.

NYC 3:0 Trump. His own city has decided he's a loser. The E Jean Carroll case, the fraud case, the hush money case. "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere" – but he's not making it there, not as a businessman, not as a cavalier, not as a mob guy. For NYC he's just a little, shabby loser.

Idk if that's gonna get through to a wider public outside NYC but that's the state of play atm. NY has weighed him in the balance and found him wanting. #Trump

@Peternimmo idk if I'm a theology nerd and idk how relevant it is to "christianity" but for getting an appreciation of the bible, i'd recommend robert alter's commentated translation of genesis. Fascinating. And have them read some other ancient stuff too. By and large I think the characters in the bible are much more complex & rounded than, for example, most of the figures in greek myths. Flawed heroes! It's like they're halfway to inventing the modern novel!

@sphericalcyclist also, meinen Geschmack trifft sie nicht, aber man muss bei Shimano anerkennen, dass sie damals, während sie die Spitze der technologischen Entwicklung besetzt haben, auch beim Design recht einfallsfreudig unterwegs waren 🙂
