Had a draining week, mind was fried... Finally found two hours of flow Sunday evening! Used it to generate lots and lots of small rectangles. Loosely inspired by Aiyu's 'Memory Flow' on fx(hash).

Or is it Voyager's hull plating after a particularly rough patch in the Delta Quadrant?

My website used to have a blog roll. Then I thought links sections were moot because social media was where the network was happening.

Now I think we should be in charge of our connections more than ever.

My About page has a blog roll again! Every link points to a site maintained by a real, beautiful human person.

@Metamere Just do it! It doesn't matter what I think.

twilliability,
@twilliability@genart.social avatar

@hamoid I feel this! I have also been posting new blog-like texts at less than 1/year recently... But there's been so much else going on.

I now think of putting things on my site also as documenting. Will future-me be happy to have this stuff in a single place to look up? If yes, that's a good reason.

BTW I really like your newsletter. It's accessible and fun! Newsletters are kind of my favorite format these days.

    Legit question: why do data centers use vast amounts of water? It’s for cooling right?

    I’m wondering why it isn’t possible to use heat pumps — potentially even at scale, to achieve cooling? I’m legitimately interested in why water is being used, and why alternatives are hard to deploy.

    twilliability,
    @twilliability@genart.social avatar

    @yosh Exactly my thinking! We do need heat (at least in colder climates), and lots of it. If all the dissipated energy of datacenters can be used to replace traditional kinds of heating, their energy footprint appears in a very different light.

    Ban the phrase 'grandfathering' (for new users only, if you already use it you can keep going)

    @RDBinns Why? (Not a confrontational question)

    twilliability,

    @RDBinns ok :)

    i do vaguely remember reading an argument against 'grandfathering' that it was ageist (?), but it was not compelling enough that i can recall it.

    @computer Also important to remember Telegram's ties with VK, which has become a Kreml-aligned business. Wired's profile from 2022 does an excellent job unpacking this: https://www.wired.com/story/how-telegram-became-anti-facebook/

    It's useful to assume that the FSB trawls through every communication happening over Telegram.

    Hey guys, since I am arguably much more active on bluesky than I am on here, I am testing an automated account that will mirror my content over. It is also federated, so technically you SHOULD be able to comment on my posts, and I should be able to see it--

    >>> @kimhu.bsky.social

    It might be a bit janky, as it is still in Beta and all that, but if you are interested in more shenanigans than just the occasional art, you might want to give it a follow.

    twilliability,
    @twilliability@genart.social avatar

    @kimhu How can I follow this? If I click the link in my app (Toot!), it just opens the Bsky profile in an embedded browser.

    twilliability,
    @twilliability@genart.social avatar

    @Zarabadoo @kimhu If I need a Bsky account then what's the point? Now I'm genuinely confused.

    twilliability,
    @twilliability@genart.social avatar

    @kimhu I think I got it after reading the Bridgy site. It should be this account:

    @kimhu.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy

    Toot! still doesn't seem to find the account, but I'll give it a try from the browser later.

    "Another interesting example is the sea squirt, an animal that migrates only once in its lifespan, in order to find a rock to perch on. One perched, it will never move again in its lifespan, and so its motor nervous system dissolves, that brain no longer being needed. This process has been jokingly compared to middle management and academic tenure."

    My pet peeve with speculative fiction / sci-fi is that even the more radical visions rarely remove the idea of nuclear families as the default way to bring up offspring, and monogamous forever-relationships as a legal institution.

    I can only think of Ursula K Le Guin and Ian McDonald who have gone there.

    Do you know other authors?

    twilliability,
    @twilliability@genart.social avatar

    @Metamere Thanks! This sounds fascinating. I will check out this series.

    I had a similar experience when reading (most recently) Ian McDonald's Luna novels: all the genders, sexualities and relationship forms presented as entirely normal, just a backdrop to the "actual" story. A great sleight of hand!
