Great news everyone! I just wrote 7000 words on Runescape because I'm a loose cannon, a free man, a gun for hire, a fucking nerd!

@onebanana Thank you! I think it's the least popular thing I've ever written, but I'm glad someone liked it! Other than @metaphys, hah. And I know what you mean, I remember how AMPED I got preparing to fight the vampire in Draynor, a task which I now realize is accomplishable in two hours of playtime.

I probably procrastinated for WEEKS and still almost lost, haha.

Intrusive thought:

Can someone smuggle me onto a Google campus so I can try and pick up a can before the normal cleaning staff can get to it? I want to add:

"Worked alongside Google staff on developer environment improvement."

to my CV.

Just read through this very thoughtful piece from @lkanies on why large companies are painful to work at, and I highly recommend it!

https://lukekanies.com/writing/why-we-hate-working-for-big-companies/

"Even thinking about it now, my reaction is, “How would they know what my goals are?”

That’s the kind of question you can only ask in an authoritarian state, not in a free market economy. My goals became my company’s goals, and the only real way to ensure people worked toward them was providing a plan."

Great news everyone! I finally snap and consider looking for my day-to-day income from outside the tech industry, but first talk about how dumb all my interviews have been for the past few months:

Great news everyone! New blog post! I talked to someone about marketing strategy and it has hopelessly corrupted my brain! Thankfully none of you can kill me until you find my phylactery (okay, it's actually about me grappling with whether studying more software stuff is actually a smart way to improve people's lives including my own).

If you can't manage people without daily standups, you shouldn't manage people.

ludicity,
@ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club avatar

@xahteiwi I love my standups and have you considered that maybe you might be doing Agile wrong? If the steps you've taken aren't working, remember that it isn't prescriptive, change whatever you need. However, if you've changed something, you should change it back because that isn't what Scrum says you should do and that must be the problem.

That will be $20,000, thank you.

This is very important.

Everyone I have said the word "Scrumlord" to has loved it, and I want the internet to remember me as that guy when it takes off. This is going to be my legacy when I'm off having my last retro with St Peter.

This describes every interaction I've ever had with enterprise security teams, and if you replace the word "security" with "data", it almost describes them too. And most importantly, it is filled with the seething invectives required to keep my heart pumping:

Thanks @dennisl for sharing this great primer on the “HTML First” approach to the web. I try so hard to instill this in developers that I work with. I've interviewed dozens of developers churned out of these “learn to code" bootcamps who have all built these over the top React CRUD apps in class but have no idea how selectors or <select> tags or even <img> tags work. It's nuts how many developers working today barely understand at all.

What the 10x programmer myth actually means:

I will break things so fast that by the time you understand how bad my code is I will have been promoted or hired out and not have to clean up after myself or explain my code.

From the outside I will look super productive. The only people that actually see my code, are beholden to not complain because then they will look bad as maintenance programmers.

ludicity,
@ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club avatar

@brunoc @tstrike78 @pkw My first manager linked me to the Akhmechet article with an overtone of "Haha, things are bad but imagine if being this cynical was warranted", and I've spent the last two years saying "Dave, have you not realized that this explains every problem we've ever had only using obviously true assumptions?"

I've reached the natural end point of my career in tech.

We had a five hour retrospective on the year, and I had the horrific realization that I can no longer keep the smirk off my face when certain people start talking about what our engineering strategy should be.

This sounds funny, but the result is that I am constantly offending the most important idiots around me, and I ACTUALLY can't stop. The slightest lip-twitch is just so visible.

Remember me fondly after the execution.

Management has brought a consultant in to interview the staff to determine what's going wrong with our "ways of working".

I've prepared a three page document that starts with "management didn't know how to diagnose this problem themselves when it's literally their only job".

I've legitimately started optimizing for funny blog posts over job security, and it will culminate when they gloriously restructure and decide my position is redundant.

RH: What kind of runner can run as fast as they possibly can from the very start of a race?

[Audience reply: Sprinter]

RH: Right, only somebody who runs really short races, okay?

[Audience laughter]

RH: But of course, we are programmers, and we are smarter than runners, apparently, because we know how to fix that problem, right? We just fire the starting pistol every hundred yards and call it a new sprint.

[Audience laughter and applause]
